About the Author

Dr. Jamila Battle is a compassionate and powerful woman tempered by the fire of years of abuse. She defied the odds and climbed out of the mayhem of her upbringing to achieve great success. She earned her way to a prestigious university and became a medical doctor with specialties in sleep, trauma (abuse), addiction, and mental health. Born in Atlanta, she moved to Los Angeles at the age of two. After 5 years, the family moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee. Raised in Chattanooga, Dr. Battle went to the Baylor School, a college preparatory high school. She attended Duke University for her undergraduate studies and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for medical school. Dr. Battle enjoyed all of her medical rotations and decided that family medicine was a great fit for her, because it respects all facets of the human body and focuses on prevention. Dr. Battle completed residency training at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. After completing her training, she returned to North Carolina as a consulting associate at Duke University. Dr. Battle, board certified in family, sleep, and addiction medicine, is the creator of “Reboot, Repair, Rebirth.” She now dedicates her life, love and passion to not only her family, but also to helping those who have been wounded as she was. After reading about what our Daddy went through growing up, that man never had a chance in hell. It doesn't excuse what he did, but it gives clarity to WHY he did what he did. HURT PEOPLE, HURT PEOPLE. What a miserable way to live. I can't imagine the hell and the turmoil that must have been going on in his head ALL THE TIME. I know that no matter how good of a musician he was, no matter the accolades, no matter the admiration from the women, no matter the respect from his peers, at the end of the day Daddy had to live with himself. And I know that deep down he must have really hated himself. In the end, he did not have the courage, the tools, or the ability to overcome his demons. We are our Father's children. The way that he abused us and the dysfunctional paths that we took differed but the result was that at our core, we reflected the self-hate and lack of self-worth that Daddy instilled in us and perhaps had for himself. We carried that around for years and years allowing it to affect our lives and the lives of those around us. Fortunately, we were able to have people who came into our lives who would eventually show us that there was actually light at the end of the tunnel. That all life didn't have to be despair. But all they could really do was point the way. The crucial work of healing had to begin from within and by taking an honest look deep into the depths of our very souls. It is probably the hardest thing for an individual to do but it has to be done in order to break the cycle of dysfunction. It takes a great deal of courage and humility to look at yourself in the mirror and to accept it ALL, the good, the bad, and the ugly, without judgment, just pure acceptance. However, it is the first step to HEALING, to SELF-RESPECT and ultimately SELF-ACTUALIZATION. It is an ONGOING process, one that I suspect never ends. I am SO PROUD OF YOU, Jamila. I am proud to call you my Sister and I am grateful to The Creator and The Forces in the Universe for bringing us together at this point and time in life's journey. You are living, breathing proof that cycles of destruction can be overcome and that it is possible to start anew. You are an inspiration to my own process and a validation that our family's legacy is greater than what we come from. We do not have to be defined by our victimhood but can choose to be defined by our creativity by being the reflection of The Creator that we were born to be. <3

Let me start by saying I was hesitant to read the book. I thought I knew about domestic violence, and child abuse. . . well, it's a subject I didn't care to read about in my free time. I expected it to be a very didactic read (cue snoring). Boy was I wrong! From Abuse to Abundance is part novel part self-help, and no part of it is boring or preachy. Dr. Battle is an excellent story teller and from the prologue I was gripped! This account of a young girl's life is written in such a personal way you can't help but to become engrossed in the story line-- except you have to remind yourself it's not just a story line, IT'S REAL. I was so riveted I couldn't put it down and read the whole book in about 4 hours! The experiences of Dr. Battle's childhood and adolescence are heartbreaking to say the least, but to witness the process by which she overcame such deep trauma felt like virtual reality. She describes her memories and even her present state so vividly you feel as though you are going through the reboot, repair, and rebirth process together.I would highly recommend this book for anyone who has experienced family violence. I also recommend this book to educators, counselors, ministers/pastors, or anyone else who deals with children. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to better understand domestic violence and/or child abuse. Reading this book will help you to recognize the signs and understand why it is so important to observe, act/report, and follow-up!! Dr. Battle is to be commended for sharing such personal information. By doing so, I fully believe she can potentially help millions of people. You need to read and tell others about this book!

From ABUSE to ABUNDANCE was a wonderful and uplifting read. Dr. J. Battle walks readers through a high level view of her traumatic life experiences on a path that serves as a field guide to trauma, teaching readers how to "Reboot, Repair, and Rebirth" their own lives as she has done with hers. Concepts that have taken me years in therapy to grasp are explained simply in this easy-to-read book that feels more memoir than how-to guide.I can't recommend this book enough; I've already started sending it as gifts and I'll be recommending it to my entire family and a bipolar disorder support group I co-facilitate. I think this book is a game changer, and I'm happy I bought a paperback for a change as there are some passages in bold that serve as great daily affirmations. This is a book I'll be re-reading. I encourage you to purchase a paperback and share it with the world when you finish with it.Chapter 44 is "Weight Loss and Sweet Dreams". Dr. J 'rambles' a bit here talking in "medical mumbo-jumbo" about the importance of sleep, specifically REM sleep. The moral of the chapter? Sleep is important, and "you may need a sleep study". As for me? I recommend you get one at Parkway SleepHealth Centers in NC, where Jamila Battle, M.D is the Medical Director. Dr. Battle is my sleep doctor, and she was the doctor that diagnosed my narcolepsy. Small world, right? She didn't know I lived a traumatic life when she told me about herself and her book months ago, but I was in foster care from age 13-17 and I put myself through engineering school. At 24, I still have some repairing and rebirthing to do, but Dr. Battle's story is inspiring and I'm well on my way to rebirthing my inner wounded child like she has done.For those that have suffered trauma, Dr. Battle makes one reference in the book: Seeking Safety: A Treatment Manual for PTSD and Substance Abuse (Guilford Substance Abuse). I'll be purchasing this for my therapist as I am always looking for help with my PTSD. Curious about narcolepsy? This was a required book for a diversity class. With it being a required book I was a bit apprehensive to the content of the book, but it is actually a great book with in-depth stories about experiencing other cultures. I would highly recommend this to anyone learning (or looking to learn) about cultural diversity.

Very insightful and eye-opening look at how to be an ex-patriot or just how to not make a fool of yourself and offend others when visiting their country or participating in different cultural experiences within your own country.

I found Storti's approach extremely useful. I'm a clinical psychologist (and a ATCK) and I found interesting how he used psychological tips without falling into psych terms. Storti's approach is clear and interesting in the sense that you can build other perspectives into what he says. I definitely recommend reading the book to anyone who is exposed to a cross-cultural situation.What did I not like? Book citations... as with many other intercultural sources the authors go back to years people from my age (37) find not that easy to relate to.

This is a good basic introduction to cross cultural communication for the novice. If you have lived in a foreign culture for 5 or more years like I have, however, you might want to look for something more in depth. But if you are be beginner, and want to know how to get along with someone from a foreign culture for business or pleasure, by all means get this book.

This book is very useful for the working ESL teacher. We have about 50% Chinese students in our classrooms at the university of Kansas. The anecdotes and examples in the book enlighten us about the more subtle behaviors of the Chinese culture in terms of learning style. The educational programs in China are very much "writing" based. The students also "memorize" as a learning tool. Therefore, getting them to speak out in class, converse in small groups is often quite difficult. Craig Storti has "Been there done that", so I appreciated his sharing with me.

This book is useful, but seems to be at least half filled with travel quotes instead of substance.

Look, I enjoyed this novel, so 3.5 stars. It'll definitely keep you turning the pages. It's well-written and exciting. BUT, if you're at all an attentive reader, you'll figure out the "big twist" long before it's revealed. There is also a very silly coda that an editor should have cut, which would have made the ending more satisfying.All that aside, you weird uncle Jimmy, sez, "Check it out".

I got an ARC of this book.There is a lot to this book. I was in love with it from the very first chapter until about 89%. The last 11% just made me feel so cheated. The opening scene introduces one of the main characters of the book. The book is mostly told surrounding Viktor. He takes his post and its all fascinating. His ideas are very Jung, which is you know me, I wouldn't normally enjoy. The exciting part for me was he was doing this and had met Jung. So it was like psychology history fanfiction for me. It was wonderful. There was even a hint of Nazis and WWII looming over everything. It was the perfect setting for me. It was the type of thriller that actually held my attention. I normally am not a fan, but this one was special.There were interviews with The Devil's Six. They are interviewed one by one and you learn their terrible pasts and their terrible deeds. It was really engrossing. So if you like reading about serial killers and why they started killing, this book will hit buttons for you. There is a lot of mythology and lore in the book too. So if you read about Vlad Dracul III and were fascinated by him, then this book will be perfect. You get all this lore about Jack the Ripper and possible explanations for what happened. There is a lot of references to demons and devils which made the book have the potential for the supernatural. There was clear strong hints throughout the book about it. It was really spooky at times. I was all for it. The romance plot felt forced to me. There was no chemistry between the two and there was no real reason for the romance. This was the weakest plot for me, up until the big reveal. The big reveal just left me feeling cheated. There was all of this build up and then it was what it was. I don't want to ruin the ending as it is still a decent ending. The plot device used was done somewhat convincingly throughout the book, though it felt more less convincing through the last 11% of the book. If it weren't for the ending, I would have given this book five stars. I do have to warn about content. There is graphic descriptions of gore and violence, sexual assault of a child, religious figures engaging in sexual assault, an assumption that DID makes someone a killer (A HUGE PLOT POINT), and a great deal of racism (mostly antisemitism and against the Romani people). So there is a great deal to be triggered by, it is easy to overlook unless you are sensitive to these things. Despite them all, I was engrossed in the book and would have happily kept reading. Just that ending...

A little while ago I was asked to read and review ‘The Devil Aspect’. Although I don’t often read Gothic Thrillers, this book sounded so fascinating and the cover looked so beautiful, I just couldn’t decline this review request. As a nurse working with the occasional psychiatric patients, this book definitely spoke to me, and I couldn’t wait to start reading.‘The Devil Aspect’ is a thrilling, fascinating and cleverly written book that makes you want to keep reading. From the very first page it is clear that the author did an incredible job researching this book. ‘The Devil Aspect’ takes place in 1935 Czechoslovakia and it’s a great combination of history, combined with fiction. Reading about the main character Victor Kosirek, a psychiatrist who works in an asylum that houses six of the most treacherous killers was definitely something else. Although there were some moments inside this book that were a little slow, I mostly found myself wanting to read more.On more than one occasion this book definitely freaked me out a bit. In a good way! I work as a nurse on a Trauma ward and see psychiatric patients a lot. I definitely don’t like working with patients that are schizophrenic or psychotic too much, but it is a part of my job and reading this book I found myself recognizing certain aspects the main character had to deal with. And it was definitely a little disturbing at times but definitely made me want to keep on reading.‘The Devil Aspect’ keeps you hooked and wanting to read more to find out what is really going on. We go from following psychiatrist Victor, to following police investigator Lukas Smolak who is on the hunt to find a brutal serial killer. I could have gone without all the side info about these characters. Which made this read a little slow at some moments, but because the main part of this book is so fascinating you’ll find yourself wanting to keep on going.Even though this book isn’t one I usually would read I must say I was pleasantly surprised by this book. It was thrilling and exciting and I loved the whole history part too. Especially since I’ve been to Prague too. As with a lot of great books that take place in cities I’ve been too, I could picture the main characters walking through the beautiful streets of Prague and it made this book even more fascinating to me.If you are looking for a dark and scary, well written thriller with twists.. ‘The Devil Aspect’ is definitely for you.

Supposedly a new edition is coming out next year, and usually new editions are nothing new at all, but with how some vehicles have evolved since this books' publication (Tesla), I am interested to see the updates. In addition, the author conveys a positive, warm, and educational tone that is not overbearing or arrogant (he knows that you are attempting to learn). In closing, books will only go so far in a career field like this, but I am studying to become a Lexus Certified Technician and am incredibly impressed.

I bought this book for a night summer class I took to learn about cars (it was required) but I am very impressed on how much information is in it. It is definitely geared towards people that plan on going into the industry since it has a lot of "how to" interface with customers but it still has plenty of information, and background, on all types of cars.It is structured so that it will describe how a system works, like the brakes, the different types of systems, how to diagnose them, and then how to fix most, if not all, of the problems that come up.

I ordered for this book because it contains information I cannot find in other Assembly language books. It deals with the Machine codes, interrupts, memory dumps, ROM BIOS routines, writing RAM resident programs etc. I was interested in these type of things because they help me know more about how to find information on a damaged drive, and in identifying malicious code on a drive. The book is very old, since it deals with 16-bit Assembly, but the information on how it relates to the hardware is very useful.

I'm new to assembly programming, but this book has been a great companion on my journey. I'm about half way through the book, but with what I've learned so far, I'm already making my own notepad program entirely in assembly! I pretty much started from the scratch so I'm in awe. The book teaches you to build an application with a series of micro procedures each of which is just 10-20 lines of code. Working this way made assembly programming a lot less esoteric and intimitating. The book follows the MASM syntax, but if you want to use NASM and convert the examples into the NASM syntax, I recommend you also get books that use NASM like Jeff Duntemann's "Assembly Language Step-by-step" (2nd edition, not 1st). The book is a little outdated but all the examples work just fine on my computer. I would highly recommend this book to anyone considering giving assembly programming a try!

Horribly painful to read. His thesis is clear from the introduction. Three hundred pages of documentation for the thesis is excessive. This is ivory tower gum flapping. You will get more from reading other reader's summaries and analysis, rather than suffering thru this on your own. I had to read it for class, otherwise I never would have. Read the summaries you can find elsewhere and you'll get the gist. Don't torture yourself. Nonetheless, his point is valid and insightful, just drowned in excessive detail and support. Just take his word for it and save yourself the hours required.

Giving Said his due, this is a magnificent work of scholarship that has, nearly forty some years after its publication, entered into many daily discussions of "difference" as they take place in the so-called western world.It's perhaps quite a long read, but rest assured it is well worth it! I find myself going back to certain passages from the beginning, particularly Said's invocation of Gramsci and the "historical record," as well as his later investigations into American Orientalism, focusing heavily as they do on East Asia--in the current era, China.

Perhaps even more relevant and essential a critique and study than before!

I like how Said uses literary texts in his analysis to show the historical origin of the concept of the Orient and the Oriental. Although nowadays the concept of Orientalism has become so commonplace that many of the arguments given in this book seems outdated, it is to be emphasized that maybe it was exactly due to original research carried out in this book many years ago that Orientalism became widely known.However I do have a few complaints. In many places in the book, the author sounds really repetitive and unnecessarily verbose. Actually his arguments are not exactly as complex as they seem. Big words, repetition and lots of rhetorics just resort to the readers emotions and sensations, rather than speaking to the sense or the mind directly. Also I do not know why the author ignores East Asia. Of course from his ethnic background, we might not expect him to have sufficient knowledge of the cultural contacts between the West and East Asia. But I doubt this. I am more inclined to think that the author is not interested in East Asia at all. Orientalism is just a channel for him to express his own pride and celebration of his own culture. So in this regard, what his grand theory amounts to might just be a resentment or complaint against the West, rather than a global theory of historicization of cultural stereotypes.

Orientalism, by Edward Said, is a controversial and extremely complex book that challenges the standard conventions through which the West portrays the Orient. Said, a Palestinian American who spent his childhood in British Palestine and Egypt, cites a plethora of reasons for assembling this momentous piece of literature. First of all, he seeks to show that the Orient is not a static, monolithic, and never-changing group, and that making such broad generalizations is harmful. In addition, he argues against basic Western imperialism, against the idea of separating East from West, Oriental from Occidental, through a humanistic approach, because all that fall under such grotesque categorizations are ultimately human. Finally, Said desires to provoke debate, "widen the field of discussion," and challenge commonly held views, such as the simplified version of the Orient promoted by the United States media, for "in the demonization of an unknown enemy, for whom the label terrorist serves the general purpose of keeping people stirred up and angry...media images can be exploited." Throughout his book, Said defines "Orientalism" in several different ways. In essence, every time he discusses a certain aspect of Orientalism, he ascribes it a specific meaning. Most generally, Said calls Orientalism a "generic term...to describe the Western approach to the Orient." However, Orientalism can also be the combined study of imperialism and culture. Including as many of the characteristics Said mentions, perhaps Orientalism can be defined more decisively, for although he discusses dozens of different types of Orientalism, a few common themes are omnipresent. Originating in the West, Orientalism is the artificial categorization of an intellectually stagnant Orient that encompasses a vast body of often degrading Western literature and justifies imperialist Western policies by promoting a sense of inherent superiority over Orientals. One must realize that such divisions have existed throughout human history. This process originates from the basic human tendency to separate one's own group from others as soon as one encounters another, different group. This was also done in Ancient Greece in regard to the Persian Empire and is exactly what transpired when Islam collided with Christianity in the seventh century BC. "Islam became an image...whose function was not so much to represent Islam in itself as to represent it for the medieval Christian." This misrepresentation of Islam to the West was deemed adequate and misconceptions like equating Muhammad to Christ were simply accepted. The view of the Orient, Said argues, then stagnated, for unlike other fields of knowledge, Orientalism did not advance, and the misconceptions and negative beliefs were thus engrained in Western thought. This lasted until 1798, when Napoleon Bonaparte invaded Egypt, founded the Institut d'Egypte, and thereby exposed Western scholars to Oriental culture, which ultimately helped facilitate European imperialism of the 19th and 20th centuries. Arthur James Balfour, British politician during this time, claimed that Egypt needs British rule because Egyptians could not rule themselves, while the infamously racist Lord Cromer goes so far as to say that "subject races did not have it in them to know what was good for them." In Orientalism, Said argues that these sentiments were largely imitated in American Orientalism after World War II. A great example of this is Henry Kissinger, who separates the Pre-Newtonian Orient from the Post-Newtonian West, and thereby argues that, "as thinkers, we are better off than they are." As such, the Orientalism once practiced Cromer and Balfour has not changed. Said asks an important question in regard to the effect of Orientalism. "Can one divide human reality, as indeed human reality seems to be genuinely divided, into clearly different cultures, histories, traditions, societies, even races, and survive the consequences humanly?" The answer to this question is no, because of humanity's physical diversity. Difference, just as it causes the creation of distinctions, breeds contempt, and drawing a distinct dividing line between two groups only aggravates this feeling of being different, or in many cases, superior. This, in turn, exacerbates the issue of feeling hostile towards "others," because once one feels superior to another group, the innate desire to control this inferior group inevitably arises. Thus, the result of Orientalism, from a humanistic point of view, can only be negative. While Orientalism has successfully challenged common Orientalist views and created immense debate among scholars, it is not without faults. For example, Said urges to stop the use of generalizations, but he grossly lumps all Orientalists into one, treating them all in the same derogatory fashion. In addition, his widespread use of French and German without translation is somewhat challenging to the unilingual reader, which can negatively impact his book's common appeal. Finally, Said thoroughly criticizes Orientalists' representation of the Orient, but fails to provide examples of scholars from the Orient to convincingly prove that these Orientalist representations are in fact misrepresentations. In the end, it would have been extremely useful and even more riveting if he had attempted to show his readers how the Orient actually views itself.
