I wish I'd had this book when I taught 9th grade humanities. It brings to life an important, too often overlooked historical event--one which has so much to teach us still. Walrath handles a challenging topic in a way that is both nuanced and accessible for readers of all ages. The imagery is breathtaking and the characters lovable and complex. The last 100 pages flew by as I hurried to find out what would happen to Sosi, Shahen, and Mariam.

A beautiful book, both in design and content. Beautiful in intent as well, as it tells the story of the 1914-15 Armenian genocide, too often forgotten by the world, through the experience of one Armenian family, forced to flee their country. Dana Walrath succeeds all the way in this, her first novel.

With a simple clarity of language matching the growing maturity of each character, Dana Walrath succeeds in telling through the eyes of children the before, during and after of the Armenian Genocide. In addition to exploring the questions of individual and collective identity, group-think and the human penchant for rationalization leading to dehumanization, balanced at times by individual examples of empathy, Like Water on Stone also explores the human relationship with time and space, and with our communion through spiritualization of the nature world. All of this wrapped into a relatively quick narrative that, considering the topic of genocide, is safe and accessible for readers of a wide range of ages. Vahan Bournazian

This is a great book for any pilot or person interested in civil aviation! I liked it, in part, because i used to fly in the area, also I was an air traffic controller at both Midway (MDW) and O'Hare (ORD) airports, and was very familiar with the airport landscape of the area. When I was in training at MDW, the older controllers that trained me, talked about Herman Wilhelmi, an Eastern Airlines pilot they were friends with, and told the story about his landing the DC3 down at his farm when Midway, then called Chicago Municipal Airport, was socked in. Also, I personally have landed at Sanger, Kankakee-Koerner, Hinsdale and other Chicagoland airports now long gone. It's a great remembrance of days gone by! I bought 5 copies and gave them to pilot buddies of mine - and my old flight instructor too!

This book brought back memories of my aviation experiences learning to fly and teaching in the Chicago area. I started flying in '68 and many of the airports that Nick talks about were already gone. I saw many of the rest of them go away.I met and flew with some of the characters in these stories.Great job, Nick. Brought back memories and filled in many holes in my knowledge.Keep the blue side up in triple nickel Mike.

Nick Selig has been sharing these stories with us since my youth (I am his nephew). Having received my copy, I just ordered two more so as to loan out to others I work and am friends with to keep up with demand. The stories capture an era of aviation history and and era for the development of the Chicago area area which is incredibly intriguing. We are so happy that he has taken the time to capture his historical narrative for a larger audience to enjoy. It is wonderful!
