It doesn't get any better than this let me tell you! I actually read this book through to book 5 in this series but I came across books 6 & 7 that I have not read yet so I wanted to refresh my memory and these books are just that good to be read again. Dewey Andreas is running an oil rig out in the ocean in Columbia when some of his men start getting murdered, and eventually it turns into a hostage takeover terrorists running the show. Dewey is a former Delta Ranger so needless to say he knows how to take care of business. There is a bigger plot of course with a major terrorist running the whole shebang. From start to finish Coes has you hooked and you can't put it down. The research is done well the characters are well rounded and believable. Pure art in my opinion. Wonderful job Mr. Coes.
This is the first book in the series of eight books, so far. I read the latest book, and then went back and ordered the other seven. I am now reading them in order. The author has improved his skills over the 8 book series - I gave book number 8 a five star rating, this one only got a four star rating, as I have seen how good he can be.First off, one has to understand that is book is not a serious piece of literature - it is fun reading, so just accept that going in. Secondly one must accept that our hero, Dewey Andreas, is just barely short of Superman - he can get shot, stabbed, and generally beat up and within 24 hours can be running a marathon - get used to it - that is the way this series reads. If you cannot suspend your belief for the period of time you are reading these novels, then don't try.The author (Ben Coes) does a superb job of crafting his plots. They are intricate and detailed. This starts off the series with Dewey running a huge offshore oil rig that is supplying 9% of the oil used by the US - yes, I know - just suspend that belief again. The rig is attacked, as are other US infrastructure targets. The plot, centers around the capture (well at least the killing) of those terrorists. There are a couple of things that do not make sense - one of the key components of this particular terrorist group, is the organization and long term planning - but, they have one of their key members, who knows the extent of the entire operation (Esco) on the rig, where he is vulnerable to interrogation. No, that does not make sense - each cell in a network is kept separate, and those in the cell should only know what they need to know for their particular job. But, it is the presence of Esco on the rig, and the possibility that he has told Dewey the long term plans that forms the basis for much of the action. There is also a continuity issue in this first book - Dewey carries a Model 1911 Colt .45 Semiautomatic pistol, yet the author in several cases calls it a revolver. No, the 1911 is not a revolver. He also has Dewey at one point putting his gun in his belt, under his shirt, and then later - has him putting in into a shoulder holster - and this is during one outing, without our hero returning to his hotel room, where he might have had a shoulder holster. One glaring error, to those familiar with firearms is when a CIA operative is described as carrying a "silenced Smith & Wesson .357 Magnum". You do not put a sound suppressor on a revolver (the gases will escape between the cylinder and the barrel, thus negating any impact of the suppressor. You might put a sound suppressor on a semi-automatic pistol, but S&W does not make any such pistols in .357 Magnum.Another error I spotted was one of the terrorists uses a PO Box to receive his packages in the mail - and the FBI says the guy that rented the PO Box, pays in cash and there is "no contact info on the guy". That is just plain wrong - the US Postal Service requires identification and a physical address, before they will rent you a PO Box. Before an author sets up such an item as a key plot element, the author should check out what is actually required, in this case to rent a PO Box.One glaring math error is when one of the terrorists, who works an eight hour shift where one of the bombs has been set, says that there is a one in three chance (probability of 33%)of the bomb being set off remotely while he is at work - Wrong! There are three 8 hour shifts per day - 7 days a week - that makes 21 shifts per week - of which he works 5 - thus the chances are 5 in 21 or a probability of 24%, not 33%.It is these types of things that bothered me, even though the plot was great, to knock it down to a four star rating. However, if you are going to read the series - start with this one, just know that they get better, as the author's skills improve.
I have not read anything like this book since Vince Flynn. This story is so graphic you are thankful it is fiction. The character Dewey Andreas matches Flynn's character Mitch Rabb to a 'T'.Both are cut from the same cloth. If you are a reader of terrorist books, then this is a must read for you.Thankful I have 7 more of Coes books to read.
If you are a fan of Brad Thor or Vince Flynn, you will like Ben COE and his character Andreas Dewey - picked this up based on Amazon’s recommendations from my reading history.Fast paced action, an unnerving plot that is only too likely in today’s global scenario. A series of terrorist attacks takes down two major energy sites - a major dam in Canada supplying hydro power to the Eastern seaboard and one of the largest offshore oil platforms - more attacks as the FBI, the CIA and Andreas Dewey race to find the mastermind and stop what could be some of the most devastating attacks on US soil.If you love action, a must read.
This was a great book for those who like action, along with political intrigue. The plot is plausible, even realistic enough to be a bit scary. While the outcome is a bit predictable, there are some twists and turns along the way that keep it interesting. It's well written, the dialogue is realistic, and the technical details are enough to be interesting, but not blog the plot down. I liked it enough that I quickly bought the rest of the series as soon as I finished this one!
Not every shot by an expert shooter is a headshot.A 45 caliber round does not lift you off your feet.Cops and State Police do not carry M60's..357's are not used with silencers since .357 is for the most part a revolver round. If you meant .357 Sig, say so.Someone else mentioned that the book reminded him of Vince Flynn. I would agree. Early Flynn. The plot was interesting and kept me turning pages. But, if you want to write a shooting novel, talk to some expert shooters and have them check your facts.Good attempt at a first novel, however.
