I'm a Melissa Clark junkie. The most recycled recipes in my kitchen repertoire are from three cookbook authors: Ina Garden, Sarah Leah Chase and Clark. Lately, Clark has been winning that three-way-race because of her use of such interesting bold flavors. I was obviously looking forward to getting my hands on this book.But upon opening the book, I was overtaken with a sense of deja vu. Many of the recipes are ones I've either made or remembered from other of her cookbooks that I have. Indeed, in the introduction, Clark says that there are recipes in this compilation of favorites that have appeared in "Cook This Now: 120 Easy and Delectable Dishes You Can't Wait to Make" and "In the Kitchen with A Good Appetite: 150 Recipes and Stories About the Food You Love." Neither of those earlier books has photos (I have the kindle version of Cook This Now, print of the other), so it's nice to have the photos, although I would not have purchased the book just to have photos of recipes I already have.So far, the recipes I've tried in this book have not totally knocked my socks off in the way Clark's usually do.— The Curried Coconut Tomato Soup, a very easy recipe, was better without the addition of coconut milk. The amount seemed like way to much. I tasted the soup before adding the coconut milk and it was delish. Although I generally love coconut milk, it hit all the wrong notes for me in this soup. I will make it again without it, possibly adding a touch of cream or a nut milk to finish it. No one in my adventurous family was enthused about eating this soup.— The Deviled Egg Salad with Anchovies, Hot Smoked Paprika and Tomato. This did not do it for me either. I did not eat it with the bread, and maybe it would have been better with bread to act as a foil, but I just did not care at all for this particular take on deviled eggs - too much mayo, and maybe just too much everything.— Raw Kale Salad with Anchovy-Date Dressing. This was finally getting somewhere! I love this salad. I threw in some toasted pine nuts for a little crunch. It's got great flavor combinations going on.— There are two fabulous granola recipes. Of the two granolas, the Double Coconut Granola is my favorite, although the Olive Oil with Dried Apricots and Pistachios came in a close second. My apricots were not terribly tart, and I think the second recipe would have been my favorite had the fruit been tarter.— Seared Pork Chops with Kimchi. This is another one of those "why didn't I think of that?" recipes. We love pork chops with homemade sauerkraut, so making them with kimchi (although in a far lesser amount) is basically the same thing but with a spicier blast of flavor. Very good.Next to try are the Mallobars - homemade Mallomars in bar form. From the looks of it, getting this book might be worth having that single recipe. I will update after I take that recipe for a spin.My favorite part of the book is the Cocktails and Snacks chapter. I am always trying to find new and fun things to serve when we have company and this chapter has a bunch I'd love to make and serve. I'll be reaching for this book for that reason alone.Bottom Line:The two books of Clark's that came out before this one, "Dinner: Changing the Game" and "Dinner in an Instant: 75 Modern Recipes for Your Pressure Cooker, Multicooker, and Instant Pot®" contain page after page after page of recipes that have made their ways into my meal rotation, with many more that I want to try. I wish I could say the same for this book. With some distinct exceptions, I somehow feel like I won't be turning to this one nearly as much as I'd hoped.

Award-winning author Melissa Clark brings us many recipes for delicious, approachable dishes, ranging from traditional (Quiche) to family-friendly (Carroty mac and cheese) to holiday spectacular (Braised leg of lamb with garlicky root-vegetable puree).The recipes are sub-titled by concept: for example, "company's coming" dishes are just that, and tend to be more complex; "weekday staples" include simple sandwiches, salads and entrees, always with a twist: for example, frying the salami in a salami and melted horseradish Cheddar cheese sandwich. The vast majority of recipes (I counted 113 recipes in the book), especially those designated "family meal," are straightforward, kid-friendly, and simple and quick to prepare for weeknight suppers.Every recipe has an inviting headnote telling us how the author came to develop the recipe, as well as notes on ingredients. These vignettes always offer a glimpse into her life and are always interesting; for example, what type of ingredient is overtaking her fridge, what recipes are perfect for pre-Marathon carb loading, and how she succeeded in making her very young daughter think that grated carrots are Cheddar cheese. Every recipe has a gorgeous color photo.Moreover, Ms. Clark's ingredients are accessible and affordable. In addition to Farmers' Market finds, she relies on pantry staples such as canned tomatoes, coconut milk, black beans, chicken stock, bagged spinach, packaged soba noodles, and corn tortillas. With one exception (soft-shell crabs), the several types of seafood and meats called for are readily available in any good supermarket.The Kindle format is interesting. Instead of a traditional TOC or Index, "Occasion Charts" list clickable recipes in each of the author's categories: for example, "Weekday staples" lists recipes in each sub-category: for example, "Dinner sides." You can see the charts on "Look Inside." I like the concept: I can look at the book on my iPhone, pick a recipe for dinner tonight, click on it, and figure out what I need to pick up on my way home: smart!

Who knew that this little book which seemed out of my usual range of readings would capture my heart, my mind, and my time? Sri Aurobindo's work on Savitri and Life Divine were my first love and on the strength of their joy factors I took a chance on Essays on the Gits a bit afraid that it might be too technical or too dry for my taste. Contrar! It is fabulous, full of delightful content nestled in a historical and cultural background that the author brings to life and relevancy. I'm profoundly grateful that I took a little chance on this life changer.

If someone wants a microscopic view of the Bhagavad Gita these Essays are a must for everyone who studies Indian Philosophy. The author gives detailed analysis of the different schools of thought and their concepts and approach to this sacred text. What I like most is that Sri Aurobindo "levels off the playing field" by explaining the misconceptions of other commentators. This book was used for reference by Swami Prabhavananda and Christopher Isherwood for their concise poetic / prose version.

This is the best modern commentary on the Bhagavad Gita. The scripture itself is a synthesis of many of the most important Indian spiritual philosophies, and is, in my opinion, by far the most relevant to modern humanity and the most inspiring to westerners. It contains instruction in the highest forms of Yoga with an eye towards the needs of practical people involved in the often confusing and distressing activities of life in the world.Sri Aurobindo clearly states his intentions towards this text in the introduction: to put the teachings of the Gita in a modern context, that is, to see how they can be made relevant to readers in the present day.In addition, he asks for a more objective look at the text than certain other interpretations. While I found that he, in general, carried this out, it is not dry, nor is there any vacillation: the book is imbued with the author's ideas about evolution and the role of man in relation to the divine and the author is clear in his interpretive bent.Most important, however, is that his explinations of the meaning of the scripture are truly magical. He clarifies confusing points with such ease and lucidity, I often found myself thinking "Ah, but that's so clear! How'd I ever have a problem with it?"This is NOT, however, an easy text to read. Sri Aurobindo went to Cambridge during the 1890's and the language he uses is not what most people are used to. He is deliberately thorough and has no inhibitions about repeating himself with slight variation if there is an even slightly different context shedding light on the passage. He uses long sentences when expressing large, transcendent ideas (that is, most of the time) and it is easy to get lost in his paragraphs.In addition, the scope of the Gita when expressed in this way is tremendous. Not all of the text can possibly be relevant to someone's life, and at times it can seem as if he's belaboring the point. Often, however, such troubling passages become the ones that are most inspiring when reread in a different context.Therefore, I strongly recommend this book, but only to people who are interested in serious, deep study of the Gita and are willing to invest a lot of time and effort into it. The rewards can be truly fabulous.

I don't think I am in a position to analyze the works of this genius! I don't even want to do it. All I can say is that Sri Aurobindo is guiding me, helping me to find my own path and I am immensely grateful for that! I fill his presence every time I read his books and think about him!

This is easily read and understood "encyclopedia" of wine facts. From the grapes themselves, through the processing into wine. There is also an extensive section on wine characters from regions around the world.

I'd been looking forward to this new edition of the Wine Bible and it did not disappoint. Great updates and expansive new information. It sits on my coffee table, convenient for quick reads when time permits. That is the beauty of the book. I work in the retail wine industry and this book is necessary. I also recommend it to my regular customers who want to increase their wine knowledge because of the approachable style of the content. Good job, Karen!

Energetic resource, educational, & fun. The pages are a different texture than the last one, which is a little weird, but still enjoyable to read. I purchased one for myself, some as gifts, & the online edition as well (as opposed to ripping out pages to travel, as I did the last edition). I read a few bad reviews about KM's style. NOTE: this is NOT Sotheby's Wine Encyclopedia, HJ's Wine Companion, Broadbent's Great Vintage Wine Book, or Oxford's Companion, etc etc (all of which I love & use). This IS infotainment. The first edition was a gift, which inspired me to research further & become a Somm (meh, why not). It also informed me of a fun way to travel. I started going to the wineries she recommended & having the food pairings as well. Traveling to Jerez and enjoying gambas al ajillo (garlic shrimp) with manzanilla while breathing the salty ocean air...I got that idea from this book, & the retelling of it, helped me pass my last Exam. If you're boring, this book isn't the right pairing for you. But if you want the knowledge of the wine world to be as alive as the wine itself...If you're not sure, sample her blog.

Great book - a bargain considering the amount of work (over 1000 pages). Highly recommended!If you want just one book covering the subject in all gritty details, get this one. But then you probably already know this given all the other five-star reviews praising The Wine Bible :-). In addition to this book (after all, you probably won't read the 1000 pages in one go) I recommend the following movie documentaries covering wine and wine regions:- Mondovino (2004) - Critical documentary- Red Obsession (2013) - Global wine business and China's influence(These two movies work well back to back)- Sideways (2004) - Feature film, not a documentary.- "A Year In...." Trilogy (A Year in Champagne, A Year in Burgundy, A Year in Port was released in 2016)- Somm Trilogy. Somm (2012), Somm: Into the Bottle (2015), Somm 3 (2018)PS: Somm 2012 is probably the least interesting of the bunch for a wide audience (since it focuses on wine exams and personal stories), but it's still worth watching. Otherwise, skip the 2012 film and just watch the 2015 Somm movie where you will find some interviewees featured again.Edit/Update: The new 2018 movie Somm 3 is about blind tasting vs branding and wine reviews. It discusses the global influence of critics such as Jancis Robinson (featuring in the movie) or Robert Parker.

I bought the first edition of this incredible tome in 2015. As an ardent winelover for the past fifty years, I fully appreciate the dedication and passion that went into writing it. But MacNeil didn't just write it, she submitted the chapters to literally dozens of experts in their specialty for review. That is how it took TEN years to write!How good was it? Good enough to take a two pound book with me to the Basque Country of Spain!I own more than a dozen wine books, most of which gather dust on my bookshelf...not that one, it is a constant companion!Imagine, a book that took TEN years to write, TEN years ago, and is still valuable. Wait, isn't that a bible?If you read the Amazon reviews of it, you will find only two complaints: when will she write a new edition, and the weight. Oh, one more: why nothing on Temecula wines?Finally, ten years and 4,000 pages of manuscript later, we got our wish...and more, because of all the changes, THE most valuable is the Kindle edition! Portable, quick and easy to search, and dozens of other new features.As a wine advocate and aficionado who is a blogger and is working on a book project on wine, or more accurately the passion of the people who make them, this is a huge help to me.I have been asked what wines I would take if I was going to a deserted island. I cannot narrow the list down, but as for what wine book I would take, this is it!Oh, and even Temecula gets mentioned, as well as upcoming regions like Slovenia!Thank you, Karen!

The first fifty pages alone are worth the reasonable price of this useful and entertaing resource. "How Wine is Made" does not just describe the steps in the process but also the decision points along the way and why/how they affect the outcome. It is not as all inclusive as "The Oxford Companion to Wine" but for most of us folks this is a great reference especially for those beginning their wine journey and wanting to take the next step. The author has a pleasing, comfortable approach. A good gift for those wanting a reference and introduction.

great reference, but very biased selection of winemakers and wineries, no rhyme or reason why some names are listed and other high quality producers were omitted. The author should stick to factual style of writing instead of dramatizing certain issues. It is also quite bizarre that Turkey is not included even though the country is #5 in the world in terms of vineyards ( after Spain, China, France, and Italy and BEFORE USA) and it has numerous indigenious grapes and a booming wine industry. This is on top of the fact that vitis vinifera may have actually originated along the fertile lands around the Black Sea almost 8000 years ago. The lists at the end are also a little sloppy, the DOC and DOCG regions of Italy mixed together. A list of important grapes from each country would have been useful as well. Tons of helpful information, so an OK book to study for "the test"
