Van Til tells the story when Karl Barth visited Princeton for a series of lectures. A friend of Van Til's picked Barth up from the airport. It didn't take long before the topic of Van Til came up. "You know Van Til? You know Van Til? Barth asked his driver, to which the he answered, "Yes, I know Van Til." "Well", replied Barth, "tell him he's a bad boy!" Later on, Van Til and Barth had an opportunity to meet for the first time. "Are you Van Til? Are you Van Til?", Barth asked enthusiastically. "Yes, I am", replied Van Til. "Well, I know what you've been saying about me and I want you to know, all is forgiven!". Van Til uses the story as an illustration of Barth's dialectical theology, how he was deemed to be reprobate and elect by Barth. I think it also points to something else, perhaps something today's Barthians need to consider. Barth at least interacted with Van Til. Should we not expect a certain level of engagement, some discussion, some debate? It would go a long way towards ameliorating today's climate where debate unfortunately is rare. As far as the book goes, if you want to get up to speed on Barth, and his Reformed Dogmatics (but don't have half of your life left to read it), Van Til does a superb job of systematically reviewing it. You will get your money's worth in this volume.

Cornelius Van Til (1895-1987) was a Calvinist philosopher and theologian, and perhaps the leading Christian exponent of "presuppositional" apologetics. He taught at Westminster Theological Seminary for more than 40 years, and was one of the leaders in the Orthodox Presbyterian Church. It has been observed that Van Til sometimes seems to reserve his harshest criticism for his fellow Christians, who are not of the same theological and apologetic orientation that he is; he seems to take a particularly strong stand against Karl Barth, of whom he says in the Preface to this 1962 book, "The present writer is of the opinion that, for all its verbal similarity to historic Protestantism, Barth's theology is, in effect, a denial of it." Be that as it may, this book contains the fullest presentation of Van Til's criticisms of Barth---as well as of "Romanism," and also Catholic theologians such as Hans Urs von Balthasar and Hans Kung. After surveying criticisms of Barth made by conservative Reformed theologians, Van Til says, "Barth's theology, together with Roman Catholicism and New Protestantism, is basically informed by dialectical principles that spring from the assumption of human autonomy.... And any theology that assumes human autonomy condemns human predication to the necessity of operation in a vacuum," and adds, "there is only a difference of degree between Barth's own theology and that of the men he describes as on the road to Rome. Their system as well as his allows room for the irrational. Barth's system differs from theirs in allowing MORE room for the irrational."Nevertheless, not all of Van Til's comments are negative: "Our first concern is not with the effects of Barth's writings. Some of these effects have been good. Barth has called attention to some defects in historical Protestant thinking, which has not always been truly Christologial and biblical.... Through Barth the Bible has had more influence on at least some (liberal theologians) than it formerly had.... For all this, who can help but be grateful to Barth and to God?"He ends the book on the note, "as in Machen's time 'Liberalism' ... was in reality a man-made religion, so Barthianism, using the language of Reformation theology, is still only a higher humanism."This critical book will not, perhaps, be of interest to even all fans and students of Van Til; but it presents an important aspect of Van Til's philosophy.

Van fails. Let me try and count some ways. He sets himself the task of agonizing Barth's ideas. (1) He does so amateurish, like a rushed student paper done as an "all-nighter" with visible chunks of No-Doz caffeine tablets stuck in the pages. (2) He is incestuous in his use of only close-to-hand fellow travellers' work. (3) He has but one basic point, that Barth de-historicizes Scripture b/c of a fix in KB'S on "salvation history."

I think of this book much like Bjarne Stroustrup's The C++ Programming Language. It might not be the easiest place to start learning Ada (I like to think that would be my, Introduction to Ada 2012, course on Pluralsight) but it's an essential book to own and read. It's very accurate, thorough and complete. The exercises are helpful and its information density is extremely high. There are other resources out there and some of them are even free. John English's - Ada95 : The Craft of Object-Oriented Programming is also excellent, but as you might imagine doesn't cover any of the Ada 2012 features. This is the book I keep coming back to for nuanced understanding and a complete explanation of particular topics.

Got this for my husband so he can learn the language. He likes it so far

The book takes a software engineering approach to explaining and solving problems with ada 2012. I wouldn't suggest this book for the casual reader, as most concepts will require a lot of concentration

Excellent book on programming. Books on programming languages are hard to write, but John Barnes has mastered the technique.

I have read Ada 83, Ada 95 but missed Ada 205. Ada 2012 have included every thing about Ada even I'm not working at programming anymore I'm enjoining Ada 2012 that getting close to completing as Ada programming language.

A well written book. If you're needing a good review, or overview of the language it's great. The author does a well job of mixing the reasons why the language was designed the way it is. The only downside is more of a problem with all technical books. It will take a while to get used to all the Ada jargon. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because there are sections where the beginner Ada programmer will be quite lost. I've had previous experience with Ada so I didn't mind it so much, but If the book was split into two versions, one for beginners and one for more experienced users it would easily get 5 stars. For programmers learning Ada as a second language you'll need a quick tutorial on an Ada compiler and IDE of your choice, and then you'll be ready for this book. I used the GNAT compiler on Linux. This book is obviously not intended for a beginner programmer in general. Unfortunately I don't know of any Ada book that is for a first time programmer. If you're new to programming I'd suggest learning something else before Ada.

The text itself is a good introduction to Ada, but I find the constant bashing of other languages like C and C++ to be highly distracting. Especially considering that many of the complains have been addressed by highly-recommented-but-optional compiler checks for many years or are more questions of taste. Other books like "The D Programming Language" have shown that you can criticize other languages and highlight the advantages of your own language without constant dissing.

Amazon.com Review

Young fans of the unflappable Sam-I-am will be pleased as punch to discover the plethora of flaps to lift in this 10-page board book version of the Dr. Seuss classic. Sam-I-am does his very best to convince a more finicky Seuss character to try this rather unusual delicacy. Would you? Could you? In a car? Eat them! Eat them! Here they are. You may like them. You will see. You may like them in a tree! To which the exasperated doubter replies: I would not, could not, in a tree. Not in a car! You let me be. On every page readers will find sturdy, easy-to-lift flaps behind which reside the familiar characters and lines of the unique 1960 classic--except for the last page. Here, blank spaces lurk behind the flaps, just waiting to be filled in with peel-off pictures from the accompanying sheet of silly stickers. (Ages 3 to 7) --Emilie Coulter

My favorite growing up and now my toddler loves it

I purchased this book (as well as all of the other Dr. Seuss books) as soon as they became available for the Kindle. It helped that there was a great promotional price at the time but the real motivator was to have them for my, at that time, infant grandson to read.Fast forward a couple of years and I realized that while the Kindle version is great to have (especially when on-the-go), nothing really replaces having the actual book in hand for a toddler. My grandson is now almost three years old and can handle the delicate process of turning thin, paper pages. He loves to sit and “read” books to himself or to his baby sister. Because of this new realization, I have decided to pick up the books in this series in hardback format.“Green Eggs and Ham” is one of the wonderful books I remember from my own childhood and I love the book's rhymes and illustrations. It was one of the Dr. Seuss books that I purchased and read to my children when they were young. We still have those old books but I gave them to my daughters when they moved away from home so they could keep an important piece of their childhood with them. I now get to have the opportunity to buy them again and enjoy reading them to a new generation.

I was hesitant to buy this book (that I love) because of so many negative reviews regarding paper quality. I actually removed it from my cart and then went to a book store to see the quality for myself. Yes, it is true that you can see some of the impressions of the previous page through the current page. However, I did not find it distracting in any way. I did not think it was a sign of poor paper quality. I thought the quality of the book felt as good as the one I had as a child. Because the images contain a lot of black lines and dark green ham :), I think it is inevitable that some of these lines will show through. Please, still consider buying this book. Please, still consider buying any/all Dr. Seuss books. I am so glad I bought this despite the reviews on paper quality. My husband read it before I wrapped it as a gift. He loved it and had no issues either!

Who DOESN'T love Green Eggs and Ham? Heck, even mister Grouch Guy liked Green Eggs and Ham after the story was over! You do not like them, so you say, try them, try them, and you may! He would eat them with a goat, he would eat them on a boat! In the rain, in the dark, on a train, in a car and in a tree, they are so good so good you see! He would eat them in a box, he would eat them with a fox. He would eat them in a house, with a mouse! He would eat them here or there, he would eat them ANYWHERE! He does he does so like green eggs and ham, he does he likes them, thank you thank you, Sam I Am!Beginning readers love this book for it's simple words fun story, and silly (but sneakily educational) simplistic didactic rhythm of the poem, which helps young readers to learn and remember (ask yourself why you still remember the words to this book after so many years!). Additionally, it enforces the lesson to TRY something, even if it looks weird, you may like them! You cannot say you don't like something until you have tried it!

This is the greatest story ever written. The doctor should have been hyped to Dr. Suess PhD, DDS, MD OvLuv because the man can spin a tail that brings tears to the most masculine of eyes. If you are into that whole men need to be tough thing. During my life, people have tried to argue for other books in the Seuss library, but those folks are wrong. Opinion does not even play a part.Stanford University did a study on the perfect combinations of words and then applied the equation to every book ever written. Green Eggs and Ham came out with the highest score. In fact, the second place score was 50% of the GEaH score. Don't bother looking it up because there are RFbF (Red Fish blue Fish) members that have infiltrated the librarian society and erased all of the evidence. It's a damn shame when people are still trying to deny the WORD. They have created songs to distract you telling you that the bird is in fact the word. Well it isn't the word, Kyle!

It is my favorite children's book. I bought it for my grandchildren and look forward to reading it to them. I want them to grow up enjoying the feel of a book; the sound and the motion of turning each page. It is a sensory delight that should be indelibly imprinted into their memories as was mine. A gift of togetherness and love they can share with the young ones that come into their lives in years to come. You can't beat Seuss, but you can add Shel Silverstein & Graeme Base to your collection too!Good price.Hardback slick surface makes it easy to wipe clean.

I got this for my little brother, wanting him to read the books his older siblings used to read as children, and this edition is so cute! They're CUTOUTS that show you different parts of the pages and it's just the most brilliant thing. Not only does it keep his attention, it lets him help me when I'm reading; he loves pulling the pages apart to let me read the next passage. I really like this.

This book was to start my newest grandson on the Suess books for Christmas. All my grand children have all the Dr Seuss books and they are all gifted children. The supplier was very good about packaging and sending it out promptly. I recommend them to anyone. The Seuss books are Classics and despite what the politically ignorant Librarian said about them they are Classic books that stimulate the mind and imagination which i feel is why they have been around so many years and are still doing their magic on our bright young minds.

Make sure you have a big screen for this one, because the images aren't scalable. its basically the same picture you'd get if you opened the book flat, and took a picture from above. you can click on the words to make them bigger, but the picture on a phone isn't that great because its so small. On a tablet, though, its much better.

A finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize!Longlisted for the 2015 PEN/Jacqueline Bograd Weld Award for Biography!A Kirkus Best Biography of 2014!"A tale of feminist ambition that reads like a pulpy novel. (Don't be a snob—that's a good thing.)" —TIME "[An] immensely provocative figure... [who] successfully maneuvered in an almost exclusively male world of politics." —Kathryn Harrison, The New York Times Book Review"In a fascinating revisionist portrait, Downey sketches a monarch both adored and demonised, and makes the case that Isabella laid the foundation for the first global superpower." —BBC.com"From Game of Thrones to Pillars of the Earth, popular culture offers up medieval stories where royal blood grabs for power, where crucial alliances are built between church and state, where important people suddenly fall over dead after a sumptuous meal, poisoned by a hidden rival. But this world did, in fact, exist, and the subject of Kristen Downey’s new biography, Queen Isabella of Castile, maneuvered through it with unlikely and thrilling success... Downey writes with eloquence and intensity about Isabella’s life." —BookPage"A strong, fascinating woman, Isabella helped to usher in the modern age, and this rich, clearly written biography is a worthy chronicle of her impressive yet controversial life." —Kirkus Reviews, starred review"Kirstin Downey triumphantly restores Isabella to her rightful place in history. This is an engrossing new portrait of one of the most fascinating and controversial women who ever lived." —Amanda Foreman, author of the New York Times bestseller Georgiana: Duchess of Devonshire"Kirstin Downey makes medieval history read like a modern day thriller. Queen Isabella's life unfolded at the pivotal moment when the old world was astonished by the discovery of the new, and this graceful and insightful biography reveals her crucial role in making it happen." —Deirdre Bair, National Book Award-winning author of Samuel Beckett"In this astonishing biography, Kirstin Downey brings to life the most powerful queen in history, whose extraordinary impact on the world — for good and ill — continues to this day. Downey is particularly good at showing the human side of Isabella, whose life was an unending struggle to assert herself while navigating the countless intrigues and treachery of men who wanted to bring her down, including her own faithless and jealous husband, Ferdinand. It's a fascinating story with great resonance for today." —Lynne Olson, author of the New York Times bestseller Those Angry Days: Roosevelt, Lindbergh and America's Fight Over World War II"Queen Isabella was the most important woman in the history of Europe, and more than any person of her era she set the stage for modern Europe and America. Using Muslim, Jewish, and Christian sources, Kirstin Downey's gripping biography reveals how Isabella acquired such importance and vividly narrates the incredible drama of her life." —Jack Weatherford, author of the New York Times bestseller Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World"Perfect for both historical novices and experts in European history, this solidly-researched, engaging description of Isabella’s achievements also humanizes her through discussion of her intricate relationships with combative family members and allows readers to see Isabella’s fingerprints on Renaissance culture and religion." —Publishers Weekly

The advantage a reader unfamiliar with the subject of a biography has is that he/she can approach the subject with few, if any, preconceived notions. I knew that Isabella was the mother of Catherine of Aragon, the first wife of the famously non-uxorious King Henry VIII of England; and that she launched Columbus sailing 'the ocean blue in 1492'. Given the characterization of the book elsewhere, I had suspected that Kirstin Downey's book might be something of a feminist screed (not that there's anything wrong with that), but this was not the case. Downey has written a fascinating book that is feminist, but only insofar as the life of Isabella was female. She was, in fact, one of the pivotal characters of world history. The world of Isabella was dangerous, complex, and violent. She led a somewhat unsettled childhood and grew up in the shadow of her elder half-brother King Enrique of Castile. At his death, the succession was unclear but Isabella seized the throne in her own right. Marrying Ferdinand of Aragon, Isabella and her husband completed the reconquest of the Iberian peninsula, an accomplishment that threw Light on Isabella's supreme worth as a ruler. While Ferdinand commanded the Spanish army, Isabella worked tirelessly to supply her husband with troops, armaments, food, and medical supplies. What is starkly clear, and what is proved by Ferdinand's sorry record as sole ruler after Isabella's death, was that the military successes of Ferdinand were only made possible by the efforts of his queen. No need for feminist special pleading here -- the facts speak for themselves. It' is readily apparent that a biography of Isabella could easily turn into a multi-volume monument. The European discovery of the Americas, the Inquisition, the continual threat from the Ottoman Turks, Castile-Aragon's relationship with the Portuguese, and European politics in general -- particularly the predations of the French; each of these topics would require at least one book to explicate. Downey's singular triumph is to distill all this into an easy read. Not easy to plumb, but easy in the sense that the book flows quite nicely. It reads like a novel. The chapter dealing with the first voyages of Columbus is very lucid and Downey makes it clear that the impetus for exploration came from Isabella as Queen of Castile. This was her enterprise, she funded it, and Ferdinand just wasn't that interested. And here it is important to emphasize that Isabella was, first and foremost, Queen of Castile. Ferdinand was not allowed to interfere in her rule in Castile. She and her husband single-mindedly fought the Muslim rulers in southern Iberia, but it was Isabella who controlled everything else when it came to the interests of HER kingdom. This is a point that has been glossed over for 500 years and it bears re-emphasizing.Downey handles the Inquisition with kid gloves. She finds Isabella culpable for its genesis and subsequent horrors of its execution but she tempers her criticism with something like the standard device of pointing out the dangers of anachronistic finger-pointing. Still Downey does not shy away from describing the injustices served to Muslims, Jews, and Conversos. Downey also does not refrain from telling the sorry tale of Isabella and Ferdinand reneging on their promises to let the Muslims and Jews practice their religions in perpetuity, and that the Conversos would not be subjected to the prying eyes of the inquisitors.Downey's feminist slant is rightly deployed to prove convincingly that her daughter Juana (later dubbed La Loca) was the victim of bad press. Isabella worked tirelessly to find suitable and advantageous marriages for her children. She married off her daughter Juana to Philip of Austria and, in a sort of two for one deal, acquired Philip's sister Margaret for Prince Juan, heir to the throne of Castile. Philip and Margaret were the children of Maximilian who became the Holy Roman Emperor. Excellent matches, politically, but Juan died young and Juana's husband turned out to be a classic example of spousal abuse toward Juana. It is too complicated to go into detail here, but it appears more than likely that the abuse heaped on Juana led to her being sequestered and being declared insane (after Isabella's death). Downey's evidence to the contrary is persuasive but the clincher for me was that when Juana and Philip were forced to land in England on their way to claim the throne of Castile, no less a personage than King Henry VII of England (future father-in-law of Isabella's daughter Catherine) deemed Juana to be quite sane and self-possessed. If anyone could read people it was Henry VII, who had spent his life reading people and their motives. There is so much more to this fascinating book. Isabella's ups and downs with Rodrigo Borgia, who became Pope Alexander VI (and father of the even more infamous Cesare), her relations with the Portuguese monarchy and, above all, her constant fretting about the aims of the Ottoman sultan du jour would all make for further books. If anything, though, Downey's book is a model of concision and an excellent launching pad for further reading. There are extensive end notes, a good bibliography, and a useful index. The only things missing are genealogies of the Castilian and Aragonese monarchies (and one of the concurrent Portuguese monarchy would have been welcome). Isabella's reign echoes down the centuries. Except for Brazil and the Guayanas, Spanish is the dominant language of South America and Central America, the Roman Catholic Church paid dearly for its excesses during the Spanish Civil War, and far away in the Middle East some would-be caliph dreams of regaining Al Andalus for the Prophet.A great read.

Queen Isabella, or Ysabel as she was in her day, was off the radar of this particular history buff for years. Its strange because if, as John Julius Norwich says, greatness is earned by the grandness of the decisions taken, then Isabella, who in the hispanic world is known as "Isabel la Catolica", should be called "Isabella the Great". Indeed she could comfortably stand with Constantine and Peter but probably she really be up there with Alexander, such was her importance in shaping the history(for better or worse) and indeed the world we live in today. What's great about this book is that Downey presents Isabella in her proper context and thats where the greatness of her subject becomes apparent. She look's beyond the Pyranees and across to Constantinople which fell to the most unstoppable force then known to the world - the Ottoman Turks.- when Isabella was just a girl. Indeed just a girl, from a lesser branch of the royal family living in a backwater, who really had no prospects of ever reigning. Her rise to power, being a woman, is in itself one of the most memorable stories in history, but it is her actions as Queen (some of which we will not like) which should merit our attention. Those actions, whether they be the conquest of Granada and the unification of Spain or the drive to send expolorers like Columbus west, were always made with a view on the Turks and her fears for the survival of western civilisation. It is clear that Isabella saw herself not just as a defender of catholicism in Spain, but as the inheritor of classical Greece and Rome and with a mission to recover what was lost, and go beyond especially after 1453. With her vision clear, the results show that she was also a brilliant manager, surrounding herself with some of the most illustrious men in spanish history: Talavera and Cisneros the clerics who reformed the spanish church and laid the groundwork for the counterreformation; Gonzalez de Cordoba the general who laid the foundations for spanish military superiority over the next century; Columbus whose messainic vision dovetailed with her and whelped her set up the first global empire, and finally the cunning but also unfaithful Ferdinand, her husband and king of Aragon and partner in crime. I should also add the Borgia pope who she kept in her pocket and duly awarded her half the world when she asked him. Maybe now we can beter understand the woman who on the one hand supported science and female education and on the other instigated the terror of the inquisition; the woman who demanded retribution to any conquistador who mistreated the native americans while harshly expelling jewish and muslim families who wouldnt convert. Enigmatic and enthralling, it is neverthless easy to get sidetracked with Isabella becuase she covers such a wide area. Downey nails her though. Five stars

Wow, this book finally makes some historical facts make sense. It is incredibly well written and sourced, it was a pleasure to read. I hope it's translated to Spanish and they get a chance to see this version of Isabella, although they may know it all, it's just here we fail to see the big picture. This book was full of Ah-Ha! Moments. The Ottomans were conquering the world! Having a Muslim state in Spain (Granada) was very dangerous thing... all those ports where the Ottomans would be welcomed! By both Muslims and Jews as happened 700 years earlier. The Ottomans were not an idle threat. It was their goal to conquer Europe, as they were doing in Constantinople, Albania and Greece! And most of the Western Monarchies were too far away to understand the threat.I didn't say the Inquisition is excused, but the "why" is clearer. The Ottomans were a real threat, and I am really glad Isabella and her descendants stopped them. I doubt we would live in a free country if there had been no Isabella. So take her out from behind Ferdinand's undeserved shadow, and show us the real leader to whom we owe so much! I owe the fact that I don’t have to where a burka to Isabella.

I'm sorry for anyone who needs this book. But hopefully you also find it very helpful. I started reading just weeks after my son lost his battle with cancer. It's now been 5 months, and I just finished reading. So much of what I struggled with are expressed by these moms, which is sad but comforting. They provided real life applications to tough situations that I was better prepared for because of their words (How to handle holidays, for example!)

The book gave me new insight into being supportive to a friend who has lost an adult daughter. I now know I should never expect my friend to be "normal" again, but there are many ways I can still help.

I saw myself in this book, and I can relate to their experiences. It hits the "nail on the head" in all areas while trying to live day to day, as I too am trying to live after losing my only child. I'm so happy to know that I'm not alone grieving a child in the same ways that only we (grieving mothers) can understand. God Bless!

I lost my son on New Year's Eve and was sort of lost. I did not want to go to any sort of therapy or group meetings; I have always been a shy person. My husband suggested finding a book and I found this one. As I read it, I discovered that many of the little things that I could not do were written in these pages. This book allowed me to know that the way I was feeling was ok and that there is no timetable for grief. I kept thinking that after 6 months I should feel better, but the women in this book made me realize that the grief does not go away; you just learn to manage it in whatever way you can.Anyone who has lost a child should read this book; no matter how you are grieving, you will find that one of these nine women have probably felt the same things and it really is comforting to know that you are not the only one and that you are not going just a little crazy.

This book meant so much to me, as I lost my daughter six years ago when she was 21. Truly, you can never know how it feels until it has happened to you. I don't ever want anyone to feel the pain and loss that I still feel to this very day, but it is good to understand that I am not the first, nor will I be the last to have this happen. I feel like I can listen better to someone who has gone through this. Yes, you do finally get "Beyond Tears", but the pain is always there.

Got this from the library and knew within a few pages I needed my own copy. Grief when you lose a child is crushing. I found myself nodding and saying " yes, that's how it feels". They get it, no matter how YOU feel after this kind of loss, one of these 9 women have been there.

I lost my son in a car accident 4 months ago. Reading helps me. This has been the most helpful book.

A gift for a friend who lost her daughter to suicide. She was most grateful for this book.
