Some good general information useful to anyone interested in growing wine grapes although a little dated. Drawings are very well done and are informative, however photos are black and white, very grainy and essentially useless.Slanted more towards growing in California as opposed to eastern cultivation. Limited discussion of hybrids and considering age of text, there is nothing about most recent developments by University of Minnesota, Cornell or other institutions regarding cold hardy hybrids.

Phillip was a pioneer in growing French Hybrid grapes, and responsible for their proliferation today. His book is still the most comprehensive guide to growing on the East coast from Maine to Florida, and I shall use it forever in my own vineyard practices. Thank You
I recently published Creating World Class Red Wine, a hands on viticulture and winemaking book based on a top down study of how the finest wines in the world are made.I have a copy of A Wine-Growers Guide I got somewhere. It was originally published in 1945, so I consider it to be kind of a viticultural history book. The author was a contemporary and friend of legends like Frank Schoonmaker and Dr. Maynard Amerine. It was written in an era when the professors were saying, "I wonder if we can grow Cabernet Sauvignon here?" In Washington State Dr. Walter Clore (bless him) spent his entire career dancing around that question. Finally, the Columbia boys from UW just went over and planted some.Still, this book contains valuable info and is clearly expressed. Once in a while I pull it down and look at all of the cool old hand drawings.
This is an entry level book with lots of practical information. If you are considering starting a vineyard (even a few vines)this book is worth the money. Be sure and read it BEFORE you buy & plant...it may keep you from making rookie mistakes.
