As an adult, Joris traveled to contemporary Zaire in order to see what her uncle had seen. Here's another book by that almost MK (missionary kid--Lieve Joris' uncle was a Catholic missionary). To those who have lived in Congo, it will bring back many, many memories. She was on a quest to see where her uncle had worked. The ship taking her to Congo was full of Belgian colonials who had a rather prejudiced view of Congo and its people, which she took with a grain of salt. Her visit to her uncle's mission station in Lower Congo was detailed, but a bit lacking in the warmth of hospitality that we know could have been there. Did you ever ride a motorcycle or a taxi in Kinshasa's "cité"? I did, and maybe you regret that you didn't, and now you can have the experience safely and vicariously. So many familiar scenes here. The book was first published in Flemish in 1987, but one has the impression that her voyage was earlier in the Mobutu era.A flight to Gbodolite, Mobutu's town, introduces us to that spot in its heyday, and a particular baron of the regime, living in style. You will be regaled by the adventures and misadventures on this long riverboat voyage by Joris. She warms more and more to Congo as the book progresses.Kisangani the declining city gets a not very complimentary introduction, and she accurately takes the pulse of Lubumbashi and Kolwezi by traveling with a young Congolese man. Her final encounter with the security police of Kisangani and then Kinshasa ends the book on an unfortunately realistic sour note. But you will find it worthwhile to relive a voyage to Congo with Lieve Joris.

This book is about the first journey of Lieve Joris to Africa. And in my opinion you can feel/read between the lines that she is travelling like this the first time. Though I had some problems getting through the first 70 pages, I became to like to book/story very much. After those first 70 pages and having overcome the cruiseship and the typical people, the real adventure unravels. Lieve Joris gave me a view of Africa that I will never experience. First of all Zaire is now the Republic of Congo. Secondly I would not dare to travel like she does, therefore this book is a dedicated window to Africa for me. I like the way Joris writes, somehow like a journalist getting into her subject. Not like a novelist at all. This book was my hypertextlink to Conrads 'Heart of Darkness', for Joris travels the same river into dark Africa.

Very impressive. It has lots of high-quality charted designs. I have not knitted them yet, but see no issues with the patterns. I suspect what most people will buy this for are the color-work diagrams, which are clearly presented. I usually buy pattern books and think I might just knit one or two items, if I'm lucky. With this I could see myself knitting several of these patterns, AND using the color-work designs in other projects. I also like that they include templates at the end to help you create your own designs. I really feel I've gotten my money's worth!

This is a wonderful book. It has a great section at the beginning on knitting mittens. Then there are the wonderful mitten patterns. Then at the end, there is a section about designing your own mittens. I highly recommend this book, whether you are an experienced mitten knitter or just starting out.

I haven't knit any of the patterns yet (I just received the book last week), but I love the patterns included and know friends and family will enjoy receiving these knitted mittens as gifts! Most of the designs are animal-inspired and are definitely not the standard geometric repeating designs that many Scandinavian books offer, so if you're looking for an uber-traditional book of patterns this probably isn't the book for you. For me, though, I really appreciate these designs, and based on the number of requests I've already gotten from friends and family, these patterns will be a hit for any recipient.I'll update this review once I've knit a few of the designs and can weigh in on errata, clarity of patterns, etc.

The book says "Big Book of Mittens" but what it doesn't describe are the great animal motifs. I got it for the poodle mittens but there is also a "dog" mitten with a Boston Terrier. I have friends with both breeds.Fisherman mittens have fishbones and fish. An owl--that one, I have to knit right after the poodle.Zebras, elephants, horses, cats, rabbits, mice, giraffe, reindeer. An adorable black-and-white cow with a pink nose and ears --for kids. The entire zoo is here. As well as some traditional geometric, folkloric designs. Even a rock guitar.

I have purchased her patterns off Ravelry and was very happy that she made this book. I made the cat mittens and the pattern was easy and fun. I love her designs!!!

Beautiful book with lots of charts and advice for knitting colorwork mittens. Each mitten had its own little story about the pattern and what it meant. I am already planning which mittens to knit first.

Well written with beautiful charted designs. There is a lot of very useful info on gauge/size changes. However, if you are a newbie knitter or haven't done colorwork before or are a "blind follower" (to quote Elizabeth Zimmerman) tread lightly. This may not be the book for you.Still reading this review and a newbie? Make a tubular swatch using just the hand portion of one of the patterns (no thumb) before you jump into a pair of gloves. The swatch can become a small bag or a mug cozy and by the time you are done with it you will know a LOT about what it takes to get wearable mittens from YOUR yarn. Go for it!

When first looked through the book I thought that I was never going to be able to knit such intricate designs. I was sure it would end in frustration. Turns out that the hardest part was picking which pair of mittens to knit first. The patterns are very clearly written and the charts are printed large and easy to read. I like that it ends with a blank chart so I can design my own mittens. One day I will, but for now there are so many more designs already in the book that I want to make.

I teach third grade and my students LOVE the Who Was series books. I bought them Harry Houdini because he was a person from history that they weren't as familiar with. The kids really enjoyed learning about him and I had a few students choose him for their biography project.

I bought these for my third grade classroom. They are great for the biography genre and then to use for report writing. The three years I've used them so far the kids LOVED them. Easy for their reading levels, informative, and people they have heard of in their lives. They would read their own and then read other that they had heard of. Could have left these books out 1/2 year and they would have still been reading them.

My 9 year old son is hard to buy books for, but when I found this, it caught my eye. He loves magic, so I bought it, hoping he'd like it. He did! It was a good length for him and kept his attention.I recommend this book for kids this age who like biographies or want to learn about magic or magicians.

Tarragon Turkey MedallionsA Recipe from American Heart Association Low Salt Cookbook, 3rd Edition Preparation of this entrée is very fast paced, so have your side dishes ready before you begin cooking it. Mixed salad greens topped with Cider Vinaigrette and Rice and Vegetable Pilaf make good accompaniments.Ingredients:• 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice • 2 tablespoons water• 1-1/2 teaspoons fresh tarragon leaves or 1⁄2 teaspoon dried, crumbled• 1 medium garlic clove, minced• 1/4 teaspoon salt• 1/8 teaspoon pepper• 1-pound turkey tenderloin, all visible fat discarded• Vegetable oil spray• 2 teaspoons olive oilServes 4(3 ounces turkey per serving)To Prepare:In a small bowl, whisk together the sauce ingredients. Set aside.Cut the turkey crosswise into 1/4-inch slices.Lightly spray a large nonstick skillet with vegetable oil spray. Heat over high heat. Add the oil and swirl to coat the bottom. My mother was recently hospitalized with heart failure, and is now limited to 2000mg/day of sodium. Having eschewed processed foods many years ago - I rarely buy can, box, or bag - I was absolutely stunned by the amount of sodium in nearly everything at the grocery as I was grasping for meal ideas for her (and her traditional Southern salt/pepper taste buds.) I've now made numerous items from this cookbook for her, and she has loved every dish. Try the pork loin with apple dressing, it's worthy for Sunday company. The meat loaf is also incredible.Additional tips: Invest in many, varied spices and fresh herbs, a good balsamic vinegar, and keep a bowl of fresh lemons on the table. There IS life after salt!

We spent over $70 just ordering low-salt cookbooks for my mother's Christmas gift as she was recently put on a restricted salt diet.. Out of the three we ordered, only one was "fairly" good. In the mean time, she ordered this one for herself and shared it with our family. I was stunned !! the recipes are all ingredients we have on hand or are easily accessible at "any" grocery store, as well as cheap to purchase. The recipes are not over the top time consuming and gourmet, making it easy for almost any level of cooking experience easy to do and for those whom are busy.. The serving sizes were shocking compared to the cookbooks we ordered for her, there was ample servings while still maintaining a low-salt diet. I got this so I could provide proper food for my Mom after she had a heart attack. I was skeptical at first that there would be anything worth making or that it would taste good. I was wrong on both accounts. We have made a few different things from it so far and all have been very good. Some have even become a new family favorite. Was a very helpful book to have.

In 1993, this 27-year-old American woman set off alone from Irkutsk in Siberia and eight months later ended up 5000 miles away in Saigon. Hers was not so much a test of endurance, although there was plenty to endure such as eating sheep's head in Mongolia, confronting bureaucratic hassles in China, and fending off overly eager children in Vietnam but rather a journey of self-discovery. She stopped for a month to teach school along the way and took public transportation a couple of times. She writes poignantly and frankly of the dilemmas caused by First World low-budget travelers in Third World countries. Should they pay more than locals, what hospitality and privileges should they expect, and what should their impact be on the people they encounter? She confesses to occasional bad behavior, exasperation, and a lack of sensitivity. Travels such as hers are not so rare today, but thoughtful, honest, insightful writing about the cross-cultural experience is. A fine addition to public libraries; highly recommended. Harold M. With all my galavanting around the world when I was younger and even lately (I'm nearly 70), I never quite took on the challenge Erika took on--to bicycle from Russia through Mongolia and China and Vietnam. After reading "Where the Pavement Ends", I ached with yearning to do something similar. This isn't just a bike story. It's a story of a young woman recognizing which of her motivations are wise and which foolish; learning to let go of original goals inorder to respond to the unanticipated opportunity. I watched her grow and change, and touch the lives of all sorts of people along her constantly-changing path, and thought, "Now if more people could be like this--whether by bike or otherwise--wouldn't mutual understanding an peace have a better chance?

This book had sections that were very original and insightful but others were tedious and repetitive. I ended up skimming sections where the same descriptions of different places started, they should have been eliminated by the editor. One of the most annoying was the obsession with whether or not she was getting ripped off or the maybe it was her condemning of people who thought they were always getting ripped of. I couldn't really tell, she says at one point that she thought she was above it and it was irrelevant then spent way too much time in many sections talking about it.The sample sent from Amazon was brilliant writing so I now she is good but I think it got to the point of filling up pages after awhile hence the three star rating.

Read a copy of the book from the library about a decade ago and I could not stop thinking about this story. Had to have a copy of my own.

After visiting Mongolia, I was interested in her interpretation of the culture - especially the generosity of the people. The book does not disappoint. Her encounters in Vietnam were eye opening. Such courage endurance, and determination!

Great read

Wow, this was interesting. Who would ever decide to bicycle through Mongolia, let alone a single woman. Absolutely fascinating, this one is a keeper.

I had to continuously admire the author and her courage to take this ride on all alone. One really felt you were there and experiencing the author's ups and downs as she rode through Mongolia, China and Vietnam alone. Definitely a good read.

A wonderful adventure. I enjoyed every page.
