This book should be on the must-read list of every thinking individual in the Western World. It is a clarion alarm to wake up to a brutal and deadly but poorly understood threat. The murderers that she discusses as elements in Islamic State (IS), Boko Haram, Al Qaeda, Al-Shabaab, the Taliban, suicide bombers and other militant groups are psychopaths. That these killers really believe that they are following the dictates of Allah is not questioned here. The Qur’an (as spelled in the book) and the Hadith have provided them with the only rationalization they need to pour out the hatred pounded into them daily from early childhood. Hatred for anything that deviates from their religious teachings begins in the home. The author writes, “The totalitarian regimes of the twentieth century had to work quite hard to persuade family members to denounce one another to the authorities. The power of the Muslim system is that the authorities do not need to be involved. Social control begins at home.” (Page 154) Hirsi Ali states that she is not extraordinary. That is probably the only misstatement in the book. Her writings and personal appearances reveal an uncommon courage in challenging a dangerous religion that has threatened her with murder and repeatedly perpetrated atrocities that clearly demonstrate that they mean what they say. She has spoken out with admirable courage that makes Western apologists for Islam look like the wimps that they are. Unilateral tolerance is dangerous. The author points out many times that murderous intolerance lies at the very heart of Islam. It is built into the very fabric of the religion. She asserts that militant Islam cannot be stopped with U.S. drone strikes. The foundation tenets of the religion must brought into question and reformed. She lists what she calls "five theses" (pages 74 and 235): 1. the status of the Qur’an as the last and immutable word of God and the infallibility of Muhammad as the last divinely inspired messenger; 2. Islam’s emphasis on the afterlife over the here-and-now; 3. the claims of sharia to be a comprehensive system of law governing both the spiritual and temporal realms; 4. the obligation on ordinary Muslims to command right and forbid wrong; 5. the concept of jihad, or holy war. Hirsi Ali divides Muslims into three groups that she calls Mecca Muslims (peaceful and law-abiding), Medina (militant) Muslims, and dissidents. She condemns the Medina group as the perpetrators of the ongoing atrocities that she describes in horrifying detail. She then expresses hope that the last group can stir people to bring about the changes desperately needed to bring Islam into the twenty-first century. The author’s optimism that Islam can be reformed, although an admirable and most welcome outcome, is also most unlikely. Sharia (religious law approved by a majority of Muslims - page 139), seeks to rule the world and drag mankind back to the seventh century. Islam, as she has portrayed it, finds a parallel in current Christian fundamentalism and Christian sadistic intolerance of centuries past. Virulent intolerance, stemming from whatever religious or political set of beliefs, is a psychologically defensive posture motivated by fear that questioning the smallest tenet of the faith throws open the entire doctrine to debate and threatens to collapse the whole belief structure. I question that backward, fatalistic, authoritarian and violent Islam could survive that exposure. It would cease to be Islam, the very word a cognate of submission.Michael Atkins, PhD

Islam does not allow any criticism or questioning of any kind, so no moderate of Islam will say anything against even the most reprehensible and atrocious event promulgated by their brethren. I often found myself wishing for a more structured approach to the topics covered in the book. In many early chapters key points are introduced in examples rather than as theorems or propositions or the like. It did provide some nice intuition, but overall I'd recommend getting a more "traditional" book on the subject as well if you get assigned this book for a class.

This book is a great balance of concrete examples and general results. It's proven very useful for independent study and is almost entirely self contained. It would have been nice to have separate existence and uniqueness proofs in chapter 17 but the proof provided is sufficient and decent to read.

I read this book quicker than I wanted to. It will be a wonderful resource to come back with the explorations and the exercises. As such this review pertains to reading rather than getting the most out of this book. This limitation aside, this is a very clearly written and illustrated book.There is a progressive increase in complexity proceeding from one dimensional linear autonomous differential equations, to linearisation of non-linear equation, qualitative assessments through analysis of equilibrium points, Poincare maps. The section introducing chaos (focussing on hallmarks of density of periodic orbits, transitivity and sensitivity to initial conditions) is very interesting. I found the chaotic behaviour of logistic map and relation (homeomorphism) to Cantor sets very interesting.It is a very good textbook and I look forward to a time when I can maximize my learning by diving into the explorations (esp. with Mathematica).

I have been using this book for years. I wish I could get into some of the specifics that I found most useful, but I lent it to a student and they never gave it back. That makes sense--this book saved my bacon when I took an innocuously named "Applied Dynamical Systems" class (ha!), and the "borrower" can be forgiven for needing it equally much. It is also vastly gentler than, say, Guckenheimer & Holmes, and has much more information than Hale.At the time that I read this book, I had only taken an introductory class on ODEs, and a pretty light one at that. With some googling and supplemental exercises, I got through the material alright. I particularly appreciated the useful examples, which I still find myself consulting now and then, especially while preparing for lectures. I highly recommend it.

The first chapter is maybe the most important chapter of any book, and the problem with this one is that it fails to motivate the material, while frustrating the reader because it skips many steps in the calculation. Three to five pages in, you are already asking yourself about the merit of the small details in the calculations when the big picture of the concepts is not explained. I came back 8 years later to write this comment, which should be an indication to the enthusiastic new math student who is eager to learn this subject. As a result of the course I took with this book, I missed the very basics of differential equations, which hurt me in PDEs, and as a result, I specialized in subjects that were completely orthogonal to differential equations. While this book doesn't deserve 100% of the blame, some of it goes to the professor who was even worse than the book at glossing over important concepts, it definitely takes partial blame. This is the best instructional book I've read! Author Michael Miller takes a reader clearly and patiently through each step, never assuming anything, with illustrations for each step. He doesn't talk down to supposed "tech-limited" seniors on their way to dementia. Perk: the slightly larger print is a godsend.This is a book for anyone, young or older, who wants to quickly know how to use their IPad with the latest IOS 11.00. Mr. Miller covers everything. After trying to add email accounts, I hit a glitch, turned to Mr. Miller's book and YES, he had covered the problem. I quickly solved it down to his clear, uncomplicated directions. A GREAT BOOK!

As a volunteer, I provide free, iPhone/iPad training classes at a nearby senior, independent, residence facility. I have not only used this book as a reference for my class preparations, but it is one that I have recommended to attendees who wish to learn on their own or simply have available for reference. I bought this book in hopes of making the transition from Microsoft Windows experience to Apple I-pad experience. It has helped in some ways, but let me down big-time when it came to specific questions. For example, not a word about printing from my I-pad. It leaves out the crucial information about how to transform an Apple "page" product to being readable in Word (finally found out via Siri). In setting up my email, using a server that is not already configured on it, it said not a word about the &*()%^% screen that popped up asking me about my outgoing and incoming server information. There seem to be crucial holes in the information needed. This book may serve people who are simply completely new to computers, rather than those transitioning from Windows to Apple, but I wish I had known that before I spent my money. Sign me Frustrated.

Highly recommend!! I have a 15 year old, 9 year old and a 7 year old who all have laptops, iPads and iPhones. I have set up parental controls, but I understand those only go so far. After learning from a morning radio podcast that the average age children are being exposed to porn for the first time is between 8-11, I realized the best thing to do was have a discussion. Without this book, I'm not exactly sure where I would've started. Let's face it-- it's not the most comfortable conversation you're going to have with your kids. So it helps to have something to refer to.I really like the no-shame approach the author takes. It's so much more than just "don't watch or look at porn." It gave my children a real understanding about the brain and its natural response to pornography, how it can affect you if you look at it, and how to be prepared when you do come across it (since, let's face it... it's gonna happen at some point).It says the recommended age is 8+, but I involved my 7 year old in our conversation and he fully understood.Another thing I would like to point out, is that even if you haven't had the talk about the "birds & the bees", this book is still for you. It didn't raise any questions about sex, which I could appreciate since we're not quite ready to have that discussion with our younger ones. The reason why it doesn't go there, is because it doesn't go into detail about what is involved in pornagraphic videos- it simply describes pornography as "pictures, videos or even cartoons of people with little or no clothes on".

I just finished reading "Good Pictures Bad Pictures" with my 7-year-old daughter. At the end of each chapter, she wanted to dictate her notes to me and have me record them in the book. I thought you might get a kick out of her notes. As you can see, she missed the boat slightly in some areas, but some of her comments show impressive maturity and comprehension. If someone offers to show you a picture, just ask what it’s about and if it’s a surprise just don’t look at it.Addiction make you start lying to your family and friends. And you must not try things you could be addicted to once. And you can joke about things you might be addicted to like, ‘I’m addicted to Dippin’ Dots.’ Cuz Dippin’ Dots are good.My feeling brain makes me thirsty and decide what to eat and also rewards me for what I do right. But if I start to do pornography my feeling brain might start to reward me for it. But if I’m smart enough to not feel rewarded then my feeling brain will make me feel bad for looking at pornography.I learned to try to not get addicted to stuff like pornography or drinking or smoking or taking yummy pills even if I don’t need them. The more I use my thinking brain, the stronger it gets. Even if I’m about to look at pornography, my thinking brain says, “No!” If I’m doing my math homework my thinking brain gets stronger about pornography.I learned to leave my thinking brain in charge and let my feeling brain help me know what I want to do unless I’m spoiled. If I want to run into the street, I don’t have to get there immediately. Say I just got home from “Color Me Mine” and I run across the street without stopping to think. I might get hit by a car, or, more luckily, almost hit by a car.I learned not to take drugs. Drugs will probably make you get pictures of pornography and trick people into looking at them even if they don’t want to. Drugs can make you lie about whether something is pornography. If you’re watching your favorite movie, there might be some pornography in it.When your brain starts looking at pornography, it starts to make its own kind of drug. After you finish pornography, you stop having the drug that your brain makes. After the drug stops, you feel pain. Some people take drugs only to feel better. Instead of doing drugs or pornography, do something you like. If you still feel unhappy DO NOT TAKE DRUGS. Just wait. Do not take drugs. Just like go outside and lay on the grass. I tried it once and it really helped.”

I see and hear on a daily basis the trauma that compulsive Porn viewing does to a person, his/her family, and the community as a whole. This book describes how the brain is impacted by ‘porn use’ in a way that even a child can understand.I personally sought out this book for my 6-year when he tearfully reported seeing naked people on a 6 year-old friend’s phone. I have always been a fan of Eric Carle books, and this was no exception.We have the whole series! My son's favorite is Brown Bear but he likes a lot this too.This book, like the others, is interactive and rhythmic, you can introduce the names of the animals and the sounds they make. Children learn easily colors, what sounds each animal makes and even counting how many characters are in the book. The illustrations are so unique and eye catching, the colors are bright, the pages are sturdy and the story holds their attention.The book finishes with a summary of all that the children have seen.The hard board book is easy to hold and very durable.A must have

This book is a lot like Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See (by the same authors), but much more colorful and beautiful. It feels a little redundant if you already have Brown Bear, but if you're choosing between the two I would pick this one. The animals are a little lesser-known so it may not be quite as helpful as a teaching tool, but the illustrations are much nicer and I like the story a bit more too.

My now two year old son has enjoyed the "...what do you see/hear" books since he was around 9 months old. They have helped him with identifying and naming animals and the repetition and rhythm of the book helps him anticipate what is next and he gets excited. This book has also helped with learning action words that we act out sometimes in order to increase his vocabulary and add a bit more fun into reading. Highly recommended!

I bought this because my toddler loves the "Brown Bear" book. The pictures are nice in this one as well. The words do not flow off the tongue as easy as Brown Bear. My toddler likes the pictures and will continue to use it.

Great board book in Eric Carle's collection. I bought this for a panda themed baby shower. It was a great book to add to the other panda -themed items I bought for the shower for my sister in law.I can't wait to read this to my new niece!!!!The book arrived quickly from the seller, and it was in perfect condition.

To say my 9 month old loves this book would be an understatement! She gets so excited when she sees you pull it out. It's beautifully illustrated and we love the fact that it focuses on endangered animals. Love, love, love!!

If your child is obsessed with brown bear, brown bear, they will love this! We have all four (Brown Bear; Baby Bear; Polar Bear; and this) and my now four year old still wants to read them almost every day. He "reads" them to me and I am not sick of them at all. So cute!

This book is a mess. The flow of reading it is so choppy with way too many syllables. They should have just stuck to basic animals and colors like on Brown Bear Brown Bear.
