For instance, the book--always of interest to the writer in me--on a gravestone carries several different meanings. A closed book means the deceased lived a long life (as in long enough to finish the last page). Conversely, an open book means the person's life was cut short. And an open book with a draped cloth over it "represents the veil of death cutting a life short before the final page of the deceased person's life was written" (181).Understanding Cemetery Symbols is a guide that will appeal to anyone interested in history, historical cemeteries, or symbols. I'm placing my copy on my reference shelf for easy access.

Tui is amazing! I read this cover to cover. She included such interesting information and it’s helping me to understand my genealogy on a whole new level. The way that they would bury a person, the symbols they would use were indicative of their heritage. Sometimes they would do things because they were traditional but didn’t know exactly why they were doing them. Much like the Christmas tree and the Yule log are Celtic symbols adopted by the Catholic Church to be inclusive. These symbols are all around. Speaking to us today in a language that needs no audible voice. If we just know how to hear it. Tui Snyder is our translator. Thank you Tui!

Another great book by Tui Snider! Wonderfully written, throughly researched & definitely a labor of love!

I have always had an interest in old graves in cemeteries, dating back to my childhood. Now I have been working on my family tree through Ancestry.com, and this book explains many of the burials and many other things I've come across. For instance, I did not know the flow for naming children and was puzzled by every first-born son being named after his father (resulting in centuries of men with the exactly the same name), nor did I ever before see first-born daughters being named for their mothers. Needless to say, this results in much confusion. This book is full of factual, and at times, humorous, anecdotes about cemeteries.

Packed full of information and symbolism, especially for us graveyard sightseers looking for a story.

This book could be about 200 pages shorter. It constantly reiterates itself. The book also contradicts itself and in certain places makes absolutely no sense. One sentence is on topic and the next has nothing to do with the topic. More than not, it has misused words in places and from a readers perspective the book wasn’t proofread AT ALL. I can’t believe I have to test over this nonsense. To add to that they continue to make new editions, which aren’t necessary and don’t have any new usefull information. But, new editions mean more departments have to update their tests, while more poor fire fighters have to continue to buy the newer useless editions to try and pass promotional exams. SCAM

This book is excellent! I am not that great at gardening and need all the advice I can get. This book has really helped me plan my garden this year and in a way that benefits my chickens as well. What more could I want?

I love all of the photos. I was hoping that this would encourage me to somehow keep my chickens in the garden. But this book has actually convinced me that it is probably much easier to just keep them out. The book actually talks a lot about how to keep the chickens out of the garden. With fencing and different tactics and seems to explain that the most logical and easy way to incorporate chickens in the garden is in the fall after harvest in the spring before planting. Does contain a lot of useful information regarding how to garden plants that your chicken can't eat as supplements. And also includes items that you should not feed your chickens.

Simple texts with awesome information and simple/sustainable ideas.After having tried to learn from other texts, this book proved raising chicken can be simple and ecological.

Fun and very entertaining and educational. Look forward to learn so much about my chicken from Lisa.

In my opinion this book has the essential tools for preparing very good lectures on condensed matter physics. It is very helpful, with excellent details of specific calculations sometimes hidden in other related books. The list of solved and proposed problems are an excellent complement to the specific topics.

I have not received the printed book yet, but I have read the lecture notes that this book was largely based on. It was very nicely written, and I have learned a lot of condensed matter field theoretical techniques from it.Another reason I would love this book is that it is not written in a rush -- it has evolved for a while. First, this means that it has very few typo/misprints, which is a huge plus for newcomers to this field. Second, this means it can include a lot of interesting new materials. I saw in the content that compared with the lecture notes preceding the book, the author has added a new chapter on topological Kondo insulators, which I can't wait to read.

I found some of the math a little difficult to follow, but on the whole, found this fascinating

Great book

I never seen so many typos in one book before. From simple ones like double double words in the middle of sentences, to more serious ones like messing up integral concepts. You can find at lest one typo per page. Concept not explained especially clear, a lot of additional reading from different sources required. Sad, the book had a lot of potential. Could been great for learning but now there is nothing but frustration.

The book's first 4-5 chapters are interesting economic history but it trails off into a more philosophical discussion of the best uses for the indicators.It also gets increasingly repetitive, as the author repeats he same examples to reinforce his point. For instance, unemployment only measures those looking for work and excludes those who aren't looking for work. Got it, so no need to repeat it at least three times.A good read but could have been better.

Very good book for anyone interested in what the economic indicators mean. I would highly recommend it to economics students, journalists, pundits, and politicians. If one becomes familiar with these statistics - GDP, unemployment rate, jobs created - it would not be possible candidates to make statements like Donald Trump's recent proclamation that the "true unemployment rate is around 25 percent". With some knowledge of what the statistics mean and how they are prepared, an informed citizenry could easily spot the demagoguery that pervades our political discourse. Buy this one!

Overall: I recommend this book to people who have an intermediate knowledge of economics or work in finance.This is one of the more thought-provoking books I've read in a while. Karabell does a good job explaining where and why important economic indicators (e.g. GDP and inflation) arose. How the idea of "the economy" is relatively new. He then goes on to explain whether they measure what we think they (ought) to measure. Each of these important indicators has its limits in describing our well-being, but at the same time that's not why they were created.I could have done without chapters 10 and the conclusion. But since it's not a terribly long book anyway, it wasn't too much of a waste of time.Overall, a recommend for econ nerds.

This is a bright, breezy and readable little volume that clearly shows how the sphere of human action that we now call "the economy" is largely a figment of the statistical imagination. It's reported on ad nauseam as though it is a real "thing", but it isn't; and fixation on its numerical measures has caused a deterioration in our thinking and in the quality of the lives we lead. These measures were devised as "indicators" to help us assess whether our policies were working or not; instead they have become a media fetish and a political stick with which to beat us into line. An excellent little volume; highly recommended!

The information in the book was very detailed and interesting, giving me a much improved understanding of "Leading Indicators" (e.g. unemployment rates, etc).. It was a little above my "pay grade" but well worth the effort.Thomas Roe Los Angeles.

An excellent summary of the collection of economic data and the subsequent application of statistics to the data. The author repeats his theme but it is worth repeating; the "leading indicators" that become the headline news do not and were never intended to fully describe a country, its citizens or its true (whatever that may be) economic well being.

The book lives up to its title: "The Leading Indicators: A Short History of the Numbers That Rule Our World". It covers the development and shortcomings of "headline" statistics such as gross domestic product, unemployment, and international trade. Readers will learn some eye-opening things, unless they already know the basics of what measures underlie these statistics and why many such statistics suffer from potentially misleading imperfections. For example, headline unemployment (U-3) doesn't include people who have given up looking for work; so if all workers lose their jobs and decide not to look for new jobs, the headline unemployment rate would fall to zero. The book does get a bit repetitive as it goes along, repeating its basic assertions over and over.Bottom line: If everyone read this book, we'd have a much more informed citizenry.

Stumbled on to this very excellent book about how these numbers have been established and how they have exceeded the importance we all have put on them. I recemmend this book to every political expert and to all citizens who await the next expectation awaited when the numbers are annouced. Do they really represent what we think they do?
