In 1993, this 27-year-old American woman set off alone from Irkutsk in Siberia and eight months later ended up 5000 miles away in Saigon. Hers was not so much a test of endurance, although there was plenty to endure such as eating sheep's head in Mongolia, confronting bureaucratic hassles in China, and fending off overly eager children in Vietnam but rather a journey of self-discovery. She stopped for a month to teach school along the way and took public transportation a couple of times. She writes poignantly and frankly of the dilemmas caused by First World low-budget travelers in Third World countries. Should they pay more than locals, what hospitality and privileges should they expect, and what should their impact be on the people they encounter? She confesses to occasional bad behavior, exasperation, and a lack of sensitivity. With all my galavanting around the world when I was younger and even lately (I'm nearly 70), I never quite took on the challenge Erika took on--to bicycle from Russia through Mongolia and China and Vietnam. After reading "Where the Pavement Ends", I ached with yearning to do something similar. This isn't just a bike story. It's a story of a young woman recognizing which of her motivations are wise and which foolish; learning to let go of original goals inorder to respond to the unanticipated opportunity. I watched her grow and change, and touch the lives of all sorts of people along her constantly-changing path, and thought, "Now if more people could be like this--whether by bike or otherwise--wouldn't mutual understanding an peace have a better chance?

This book had sections that were very original and insightful but others were tedious and repetitive. I ended up skimming sections where the same descriptions of different places started, they should have been eliminated by the editor. One of the most annoying was the obsession with whether or not she was getting ripped off or the maybe it was her condemning of people who thought they were always getting ripped of. I couldn't really tell, she says at one point that she thought she was above it and it was irrelevant then spent way too much time in many sections talking about it.The sample sent from Amazon was brilliant writing so I now she is good but I think it got to the point of filling up pages after awhile hence the three star rating.

Read a copy of the book from the library about a decade ago and I could not stop thinking about this story. Had to have a copy of my own.

After visiting Mongolia, I was interested in her interpretation of the culture - especially the generosity of the people. The book does not disappoint. Her encounters in Vietnam were eye opening. Such courage endurance, and determination!

Great read

Wow, this was interesting. Who would ever decide to bicycle through Mongolia, let alone a single woman. Absolutely fascinating, this one is a keeper.

I had to continuously admire the author and her courage to take this ride on all alone. One really felt you were there and experiencing the author's ups and downs as she rode through Mongolia, China and Vietnam alone. Definitely a good read.

A wonderful adventure. I enjoyed every page.

Alex thank you so much for this readtastic series I was hooked after Slim's Revenge. This ride 26 books strong has been amazing. While I am so sad to see it end you truly went out with a bang. I never saw that coming my big homie giving his life so that the others can live and get away My Antwan dying broke my heart. Slim is truly an amazing man. Why did Jamel get greedy he could have asked me and I would have told him the big Mexican wasn't dead. Glad to see Chaco, Valdez, and Champagne got what they deserved only wished that they castrated Chaco before he met his demise. Please publish a book and let us know how little Chavez and his mother make out. I could go on and on. Once again thank you for the extended family it was truly a ride. To all of my fallen family RIP. Kudos you are a gifted and talented man. You have the ability to pen 26 books and had all of your fans begging for more. I will say this again people if you have not read these books you are truly missing out these books have connected people all around the world we have a chat group where we discuss each book One of Alex Angel's forever can't wait for the next ride. Your day one . Kudos, kudos and kudos again. I will be back with another review. People get on board you will not be disappointed Love you Alex.....

Chavez was a fitting ending for the Corner Boys series. It speaks to the love and Loyalty the team had for each other along with love and respect for Slim, their leader. Chavez was committed to saving his niece at all cost and lost his life to save her and Slim. The was a ruthless man toward his enemies but a man of love to his friends. He left a loving impression and child with his new love, Dahteste.I hated that Antawn was killed but all of Slim's friends couldn't live.Jamal turned out not to be the man Slim thought he was and died for his deceit.Mari was so tuned into her man that she never belied he was dead. She used the connections and skills she learned from Slim to bring him home and cost wasn't a factor. The ending was excellent with Slim checking and taking out all of his enemies from afar.

Chevez is a legend on a mission an oh boy what a mission.... He hooked up with the old Corner crew to take care of business...... Hated to see a couple of favorite characters die but another favorite resurrected. Begging for more this series.. It could go in forever and I'd keep reading.... Bravo Alex Richardson!!!!

This was a 5 star rating because after 26 books in the series it remains exciting and unpredictable. After reading all of the books in the series, I am now ready to see the movie.The characters were so descriptive that you soon forget that this is fiction and you become a part of the crew. Those of us who follow the author would impatiently sit on the edge of our seats waiting for the release of the next book. I was disappointed that two of the crew members never lived to see their happy ever after. But the ending gives me hope that there might be a new generation lying in the cut ready to do their own thing. Thank you Alex Richardson for taking us on this ride!. It's been awesome.

Alright Alex job well done although I saw some shortcuts when u left chapter 11 n started 12 I was at a loss for words why did u rush thru without giving us the details I felt cheated i really wished u could've slowed it down at times I wasn't feeling like u wrote this too many details was left out the Jamal knowing threw me just somethings left unsaid. But all in all I loved catching up with my favorite family of thugs n da women that love em..Keep doing ya thing n imma keep ridin witchu.. looking forward to that new book btw Kuddos to you sir..

I totally enjoyed the book. I have all of The Corner series and have enjoyed all. Got to know the characters as if I really knew them in life. I like the style of the writer. It flows smoothly. I didn't like that Chavez died but that's life. I am sure his son will pop up when he is born and that will be another story. At least I hope so. I would recommend this series to everybody. It is worth the money. I have went back and read the series again while I wait on the next one and it is just as good the second time.

Omg......this was so good. I'm still not ready for this series to end because there are more stories to tell. Chavez is a beast and will do whatever for the people he cares about the most. There were a lot of losses in this book but many surprises as well. True friendships never day and family is everything. I would love to see another story but I know all good things must come to an end. The Corner will always be my favorite set of novels and I really enjoyed the ride.....thanks so much Alex Richardson!!!

I have been with this series since the beginning it's been one hell of a ride I loved every word and page. The death of the 2 in this book got me to tears. This series was the best of everything 5 starts all the way through. This series of people felt like family..... Thank you for this awesome ride Mr. Richardson...

I purchased a new book but the CD didn't match the questions in the book and it was new and unopened. I couldn't register my book because it wasn't on the list of books that could be registered. So I couldn't study the listening part of the test. Before anyone asks, I do speak and understand English. I was born and raised in America. For someone who doesn't speak English very well this book is a waste of time. I'm not sure if mine was defective or if this is typical.

Genuine book, I was able to register it on the Kaplan website. The CD also works.

Radu R. Florescu was born in Bucharest, Romania and is an indirect descendant of Prince Dracula. He received both BA and MA degrees from Christ Church, Oxford University and a PhD from Indiana University. He is professor emeritus of history at Boston College and is author of The Struggle Against Russia in the Romanian Principalities and co-author of a half dozen books on the story of Vlad Tepes, the historical Dracula. With almost a dozen books to his name, his academic work has been the subject of documentaries by The History Channel, Discovery, Canadian Broadcasting, and other international networks.Matei Cazacu received his BA and MA from the University of Bucharest and his PhD from the Sorbonne in Paris. He served as a senior researcher at the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) in Paris. Professor Cazacu is the author of a few dozen books including Dracula (Tallandier, Paris, 2004), Gilles de Rais, or Blue Beard, (Tallandier, Paris, 2005), and Frankenstein (with Professor Florescu, Tallandier, 2011). An excellent book which provides clear instructions on the optimal push up form to build a bigger chest. I had been doing bench press for 6 months without effectively activating my chest muscles (and therefore only generating small chest muscle growth). After using the push up technique instructed by the author for one week, I have gained more development in my chest and triceps than 2 months of bench press. This guy has the body to back up his technique. For a guy serious about building a chest, spending $3 on this book will be the best return on investment you could hope for.

I learned about Mr. Arvanitakis via an article by The Art of Manliness. After the article I downloaded his free ebook and now have purchased this one. Easy ready, very short but to the point. If you are looking for a book that details push up technique and various push up styles, this is not it. I am a trainer so there was nothing here that i did not know however it does bring it all together. We are all guilty of slacking here and there and Anthony does make a very clear point - tension rules. As anything in live you must actually do it, willing is not enough. I tried all his tips on one of my victims during a push up and pull up session, and although we cut the usual reps to half, the difference was amazing. I now do push ups only this way.

I liked that it was short and concise, I've been doing push-ups for years and was at a point of doing 10 sets of 30 reps which was time consuming.Doing what is taught in this book I was barely able to do 6 sets of 15, a real eye opener. And I feel more of a pump doing it the way the book tells you!I Would Highly Recommend this book

This is an excellent primer on the push up. All real training goes back to the basics. Don't mistake bodybuilding books which focus on the basics to be for beginners. Too many people try to for progress doing the exercise incorrectly. And in physical training, form is everything. It is important to review your form even if you have been exercising for years. Probably even more important given the bad habits you can acquire.The negative for me is that there are a variety of different push up positions which focus on different areas of the pectorals. I wish he would have reviewed some of them.

War of the End of the world is a brilliant novel that is quite long and almost never lags.I read it in the way you read a better mystery or horror novel, I couldn't wait to find out what would happen next.The difference being, WAR has alot more substance than the typical genre novel.The story is set in late 19th century Brazil.The monarchy has been overthrown and the country is now a republic.An itinerant Catholic preacher( not a priest) called the Counselor, turns against the republic for a variety of reasons and with his followers seizes control of Canudos, a hacienda owned by the Baron.The Counselor gathers around him a large following of the poor , the wretched and a number of former outlaws.He isn't preaching revolution and isn't trying to overthrow the government which he deems Satanic.If I understand things correctly, he's gathering in the righteous and waiting for the end of the world.The government can't accept this and decides to crush Canudos.The assumption is , it will be easy .It takes three military expeditions to do it, with much carnage.What makes the novel so compelling is that the author is deeply interested in how religion and politics intersected to create modern Latin America and to some degree the broader modern world.At the heart of the novel is a complex power game played by various elites.The old elite is on its last legs.It 's the conservative , Catholic aristocracy which is embodied in the character of the Baron.The Baron is horrified by what's happened at Canudos.He's lost some major property.Adding insult to injury,his main political rivals,the progressive republicans claim - dishonestly- that he and his ilk are actually in league with the Counselor.The Baron concludes it's time to change if anything is to remain the same and forms an alliance with the progressives to crush Canudos.The new bourgeois progressive ruling class is no more in touch with the "masses" then the old aristocrats ( arguably less so).It's also doubtful that their hold on power will be of long duration.Waiting in the wings is the military.There are two characters who coming from different perspectives see this as the charade that it to some degree is, the Baron and Galileo Gall , a British anarchist and phrenologist who is instinctively drawn to Canudos.The book goes in some strange directions near the end and it is a resolutely down beat novel.However, MVL show himself to be a master of narrative here and it's one of the most intellectually stimulating books I've read in ages.

The master at his best. If you're a fan of "The Bad Girl" and "The Feast of the Goat" you'll love this book. Llosa introduces us to a myriad of characters, each of whom is compelling in their own right. What I found so fascinating about this book is that while there is no one character to identify with, I was completely drawn to the stories of all those involved in the Canudos story. Also of interest (or distress, I suppose) is that all those sides involved in this conflict -- the religious fanatics, the elite, progressives, the military, the church, even the radical revolutionary -- claim to want to improve the lot of the poor and downtrodden, yet each group ultimately betrays and exploits them. As always, Llosa's writing is spellbinding and artful, a work so enticing you'll have difficulty putting it down.

If you're only going to read one novel this year by a Latin American author make it this one.The novel centers itself on a real incident, the razing and massacre of a community of ex-slaves, mestisos, and others at Canudos Brazil in 1897 by government forces. The community was led by a charismatic leader whose theology was a lethal brew of catholic mysticism and anti-government paranoia.The community which he founded has been estimated to have reached a population of approximately 25,000 at its height. It was located in the extreme north of the state of Bahia, a rough, unforgiving area where infrastructure was unknown and small towns and settlements were connected to the outside world by cattle tracks.Government intuitions and basic development in Bahia were concentrated along the coast. Even a couple hundred miles inland the government essentially disappeared except for the largely infective rural police.The area teemed with bandit bands that collected extortion from the large haciendas and terrorized small settlements with raw violence.On top of this the inhabitants were routinely punished by cycles of extended droughts that drove the subsistence farmers off the land, forced the abandonment of settlements and caused the deaths of hundreds of thousands through starvation, the rigors of forced migration and disease.The individuals who could exert any kind of force in the area were the white landed oligarchs who had amassed large tracts of land, had their own hired guns and were plugged into the political machine in Salvador.Into that brutal explosive landscape wanders Mario Vargas Llosa's cast of characters, navigating the dangers as best they can, sometimes successfully, sometimes not, until in one form or another, they are reeled into the simmering tragedy at Canudos.Lloas is a wonderful story teller and the reader is pulled along by his narrative that speaks with voices from each level of the social strata.Skillfully he starts with a series of small panoramas that expand, grow and morph into a grand scale where all the different pieces meld into whole clothe.
