I paraphrase Gandhi's famous quote. If that isn't an indictment of modern Christianity, I don't know what is!This is a wonderful, inspiring, challenging and frightening book, but like previous reviewer Rebel Girl says in her critical review, it's not perfect, and it could have used some editing and fact-checking. But I still give it five stars because, for one thing, there are precious few books like this. For another, this gives us the personal stories of people who have actually decided to follow Christ with everything they've got. How rare is that?We have millions of Christians in this country who call themselves Christians and who pray and go to church and are 'good', but there are so few of us who have the guts and commitment to actually live our faith. To put ourselves on the line. To take a stand which might endanger us or alienate us from our own families and friends. Yes, the people profiled in this book are rabble-rousers, radicals, rebels and dangerous to the status quo. I admire them. I wish I had a fraction of their courage. I find their stories inspirational and hopeful.I would hazard a guess that many of the people in this book would not be voting for the GOP. But that is only my opinion.

Very inspirational for people of faith who do not often see models of Christian faith lived out through social activism. Useful. For social progressive activists to see examples of people of faith join in common cause to make our society and the world a better place.

I have been enjoying reading this much over-looked personal history of conversion and witness. I find the author's writing highly engaging -- lots of information, insight, combined with a focus and an energy that is wonderful. As a Plowhares activist who is briefly mentioned in this book, I was delighted to see so many familiar names. However, I'm learning there are many facets of the lives of other activists that I really knew nothing about. I have been enormously impressed reading the life of Roy Bourgeois, a friend since 1976, but with whom I have never had the chance to learn all the depth and breadth of his exceptional conversion and courage. And now, for speaking out for equality for women, Father Roy -- one of the few Catholic priests who amounts to anything -- is cast out. I hope this great book is read widely to awaken people to how damaging it is to have Caiphas lording over all the Scribes and Pharasees worldwide in the Catholic Church, conspiring against Christ once again.

Mine is a militant brand of atheism. Richard Dawkins is my favorite and I am quick to rise to the debate when religion gets involved. This book was so difficult for me because it riveted me with accounts of religious activists that I couldn't help but greatly admire. The first chapter alone made me almost cry on the subway. Twice. After spending literal weeks thinking about it, I've boiled down the intellectual change this book forced me to take.50 years ago if you asked an American, "How do you feel about black people?" You would have gotten a lot of sweeping generalizations. Martin Luther King, Jr. taught us that the only correct answer is, "It depends on the black person." Two months ago if you asked me how I felt about religious people I would have said, "A few are alright, but I think they're a little nuts." I now appreciate that the only correct answer is, "It depends on the religious person."In fact, let's talk about religion being the opiate of the masses. How do you feel about amphetamine addicts? Well, in theory, it seems like a bad idea. But Erdosh, a hugely important titan of mathematics, was only capable of being the brilliant man he was while he was on amphetamines. I wonder if a lot of titans of social justice are only capable of doing what they do because of their religious beliefs.

`Religion kills', religion `is a form of mental illness', `religion poisons everything' - these are some of the hyperbolic slogans put forward by the popular New Atheist movement over the last decade. However, in this meticulously researched and refreshing debut, Deena Guzder helps counter the reductionist polemic of Dawkins, Harris and Hitchens by revealing the under-reported story of progressive Christian activists in America. About the Author

Josep Pla (1897–1981), the eldest of four children, was born in Palafrugell on the Costa Brava to a family of landowners. He studied law in Barcelona, abandoned law for journalism, and in 1920 moved to Paris to serve as the correspondent for the Spanish newspaper La Publicidad. Banned from Spain in 1924 for his criticisms of the dictator Primo de Rivera, Pla continued to report from Russia, Rome, Berlin, and London, before returning to Madrid in 1927. He supported the new Spanish Republic that emerged in 1931, but was soon disillusioned and left the country during the Civil War, returning in 1939. Under the Franco regime, he was internally exiled to Palafrugell and his articles for the weekly review Destino were frequently censored. After 1947 his work began to be published in Catalan, and his complete works were published in full in 1966. They comprise forty-five volumes, of which The Gray Notebook—begun in 1919, but polished and added to throughout the intervening years—is the first.Peter Bush is an award-winning translator who lives in Barcelona. I adore this book! Lover's of literature, do not miss! I love this book so much that I give it to friends, who also appreciate 'discovering' Joseph Pla. Pla gives readers perspective into real Spain - what Hemingway descried as "The Last Great country". But also. The Grey Notebook is a cozy mesmerizing & often humorous read into a culture that isn't 'over-played '. There are new books coming out every decade about life in France - if not every year since Marcel Proust , but THIS is a rare peek into the wonderful Catalan culture, where the arts are expressed with remarkable virtuosity. In fact, I would describe Joseph Pla as the perfect window into the Catalunya of Antoni Guadi. Whats more, there are vignettes about Barcelona but also the Costa Brava where cooking and the art of gastronomy has really ruled Europe, since early medieval times, and Pla loves to write about cooking.

About the Author

Dr. Jamila Battle is a compassionate and powerful woman tempered by the fire of years of abuse. She defied the odds and climbed out of the mayhem of her upbringing to achieve great success. Dr. Battle completed residency training at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. After completing her training, she returned to North Carolina as a consulting associate at Duke University. Dr. Battle, board certified in family, sleep, and addiction medicine, is the creator of “Reboot, Repair, Rebirth.” She now dedicates her life, love and passion to not only her family, but also to helping those who have been wounded as she was. She brings you the shining light of possibility and true hope for you to experience “Reboot, Repair, and Rebirth™” in your life. This innovative model aids women and their families who have suffered trauma to truly forgive themselves, so they can become fully integrated and capable of self-love. After reading about what our Daddy went through growing up, that man never had a chance in hell. It doesn't excuse what he did, but it gives clarity to WHY he did what he did. HURT PEOPLE, HURT PEOPLE. What a miserable way to live. I can't imagine the hell and the turmoil that must have been going on in his head ALL THE TIME. I know that no matter how good of a musician he was, no matter the accolades, no matter the admiration from the women, no matter the respect from his peers, at the end of the day Daddy had to live with himself. And I know that deep down he must have really hated himself. In the end, he did not have the courage, the tools, or the ability to overcome his demons. We are our Father's children. The way that he abused us and the dysfunctional paths that we took differed but the result was that at our core, we reflected the self-hate and lack of self-worth that Daddy instilled in us and perhaps had for himself. We carried that around for years and years allowing it to affect our lives and the lives of those around us. Fortunately, we were able to have people who came into our lives who would eventually show us that there was actually light at the end of the tunnel. That all life didn't have to be despair. But all they could really do was point the way. The crucial work of healing had to begin from within and by taking an honest look deep into the depths of our very souls. It is probably the hardest thing for an individual to do but it has to be done in order to break the cycle of dysfunction. It takes a great deal of courage and humility to look at yourself in the mirror and to accept it ALL, the good, the bad, and the ugly, without judgment, just pure acceptance. However, it is the first step to HEALING, to SELF-RESPECT and ultimately SELF-ACTUALIZATION. It is an ONGOING process, one that I suspect never ends. I am SO PROUD OF YOU, Jamila. Let me start by saying I was hesitant to read the book. I thought I knew about domestic violence, and child abuse. . . well, it's a subject I didn't care to read about in my free time. I expected it to be a very didactic read (cue snoring). Boy was I wrong! From Abuse to Abundance is part novel part self-help, and no part of it is boring or preachy. Dr. Battle is an excellent story teller and from the prologue I was gripped! This account of a young girl's life is written in such a personal way you can't help but to become engrossed in the story line-- except you have to remind yourself it's not just a story line, IT'S REAL. I was so riveted I couldn't put it down and read the whole book in about 4 hours! The experiences of Dr. Battle's childhood and adolescence are heartbreaking to say the least, but to witness the process by which she overcame such deep trauma felt like virtual reality. She describes her memories and even her present state so vividly you feel as though you are going through the reboot, repair, and rebirth process together.I would highly recommend this book for anyone who has experienced family violence. I also recommend this book to educators, counselors, ministers/pastors, or anyone else who deals with children. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to better understand domestic violence and/or child abuse. Reading this book will help you to recognize the signs and understand why it is so important to observe, act/report, and follow-up!! Dr. Battle is to be commended for sharing such personal information. By doing so, I fully believe she can potentially help millions of people. You need to read and tell others about this book!

From ABUSE to ABUNDANCE was a wonderful and uplifting read. Dr. J. Battle walks readers through a high level view of her traumatic life experiences on a path that serves as a field guide to trauma, teaching readers how to "Reboot, Repair, and Rebirth" their own lives as she has done with hers. Concepts that have taken me years in therapy to grasp are explained simply in this easy-to-read book that feels more memoir than how-to guide.I can't recommend this book enough; I've already started sending it as gifts and I'll be recommending it to my entire family and a bipolar disorder support group I co-facilitate. I think this book is a game changer, and I'm happy I bought a paperback for a change as there are some passages in bold that serve as great daily affirmations. This is a book I'll be re-reading. I encourage you to purchase a paperback and share it with the world when you finish with it.Chapter 44 is "Weight Loss and Sweet Dreams". Dr. J 'rambles' a bit here talking in "medical mumbo-jumbo" about the importance of sleep, specifically REM sleep. The moral of the chapter? Sleep is important, and "you may need a sleep study". As for me? I recommend you get one at Parkway SleepHealth Centers in NC, where Jamila Battle, M.D is the Medical Director. Dr. Battle is my sleep doctor, and she was the doctor that diagnosed my narcolepsy. Small world, right? She didn't know I lived a traumatic life when she told me about herself and her book months ago, but I was in foster care from age 13-17 and I put myself through engineering school. At 24, I still have some repairing and rebirthing to do, but Dr. Battle's story is inspiring and I'm well on my way to rebirthing my inner wounded child like she has done.For those that have suffered trauma, Dr. Battle makes one reference in the book: Seeking Safety: A Treatment Manual for PTSD and Substance Abuse (Guilford Substance Abuse). I'll be purchasing this for my therapist as I am always looking for help with my PTSD. Curious about narcolepsy? This was a required book for a diversity class. With it being a required book I was a bit apprehensive to the content of the book, but it is actually a great book with in-depth stories about experiencing other cultures. I would highly recommend this to anyone learning (or looking to learn) about cultural diversity.

Very insightful and eye-opening look at how to be an ex-patriot or just how to not make a fool of yourself and offend others when visiting their country or participating in different cultural experiences within your own country.

I found Storti's approach extremely useful. I'm a clinical psychologist (and a ATCK) and I found interesting how he used psychological tips without falling into psych terms. Storti's approach is clear and interesting in the sense that you can build other perspectives into what he says. I definitely recommend reading the book to anyone who is exposed to a cross-cultural situation.What did I not like? Book citations... as with many other intercultural sources the authors go back to years people from my age (37) find not that easy to relate to.

This is a good basic introduction to cross cultural communication for the novice. If you have lived in a foreign culture for 5 or more years like I have, however, you might want to look for something more in depth. But if you are be beginner, and want to know how to get along with someone from a foreign culture for business or pleasure, by all means get this book.

This book is very useful for the working ESL teacher. We have about 50% Chinese students in our classrooms at the university of Kansas. The anecdotes and examples in the book enlighten us about the more subtle behaviors of the Chinese culture in terms of learning style. The educational programs in China are very much "writing" based. The students also "memorize" as a learning tool. Therefore, getting them to speak out in class, converse in small groups is often quite difficult. Craig Storti has "Been there done that", so I appreciated his sharing with me.

This book is useful, but seems to be at least half filled with travel quotes instead of substance.

Look, I enjoyed this novel, so 3.5 stars. It'll definitely keep you turning the pages. It's well-written and exciting. BUT, if you're at all an attentive reader, you'll figure out the "big twist" long before it's revealed. There is also a very silly coda that an editor should have cut, which would have made the ending more satisfying.All that aside, you weird uncle Jimmy, sez, "Check it out".

I got an ARC of this book.There is a lot to this book. I was in love with it from the very first chapter until about 89%. The last 11% just made me feel so cheated. The opening scene introduces one of the main characters of the book. The book is mostly told surrounding Viktor. He takes his post and its all fascinating. His ideas are very Jung, which is you know me, I wouldn't normally enjoy. The exciting part for me was he was doing this and had met Jung. So it was like psychology history fanfiction for me. It was wonderful. There was even a hint of Nazis and WWII looming over everything. It was the perfect setting for me. It was the type of thriller that actually held my attention. I normally am not a fan, but this one was special.There were interviews with The Devil's Six. They are interviewed one by one and you learn their terrible pasts and their terrible deeds. It was really engrossing. So if you like reading about serial killers and why they started killing, this book will hit buttons for you. There is a lot of mythology and lore in the book too. So if you read about Vlad Dracul III and were fascinated by him, then this book will be perfect. You get all this lore about Jack the Ripper and possible explanations for what happened. There is a lot of references to demons and devils which made the book have the potential for the supernatural. There was clear strong hints throughout the book about it. It was really spooky at times. I was all for it. The romance plot felt forced to me. There was no chemistry between the two and there was no real reason for the romance. This was the weakest plot for me, up until the big reveal. The big reveal just left me feeling cheated. There was all of this build up and then it was what it was. I don't want to ruin the ending as it is still a decent ending. The plot device used was done somewhat convincingly throughout the book, though it felt more less convincing through the last 11% of the book. If it weren't for the ending, I would have given this book five stars. I do have to warn about content. There is graphic descriptions of gore and violence, sexual assault of a child, religious figures engaging in sexual assault, an assumption that DID makes someone a killer (A HUGE PLOT POINT), and a great deal of racism (mostly antisemitism and against the Romani people). So there is a great deal to be triggered by, it is easy to overlook unless you are sensitive to these things. Despite them all, I was engrossed in the book and would have happily kept reading. Just that ending...

A little while ago I was asked to read and review ‘The Devil Aspect’. Although I don’t often read Gothic Thrillers, this book sounded so fascinating and the cover looked so beautiful, I just couldn’t decline this review request. As a nurse working with the occasional psychiatric patients, this book definitely spoke to me, and I couldn’t wait to start reading.‘The Devil Aspect’ is a thrilling, fascinating and cleverly written book that makes you want to keep reading. From the very first page it is clear that the author did an incredible job researching this book. ‘The Devil Aspect’ takes place in 1935 Czechoslovakia and it’s a great combination of history, combined with fiction. Reading about the main character Victor Kosirek, a psychiatrist who works in an asylum that houses six of the most treacherous killers was definitely something else. Although there were some moments inside this book that were a little slow, I mostly found myself wanting to read more.On more than one occasion this book definitely freaked me out a bit. In a good way! I work as a nurse on a Trauma ward and see psychiatric patients a lot. I definitely don’t like working with patients that are schizophrenic or psychotic too much, but it is a part of my job and reading this book I found myself recognizing certain aspects the main character had to deal with. And it was definitely a little disturbing at times but definitely made me want to keep on reading.‘The Devil Aspect’ keeps you hooked and wanting to read more to find out what is really going on. We go from following psychiatrist Victor, to following police investigator Lukas Smolak who is on the hunt to find a brutal serial killer. I could have gone without all the side info about these characters. Which made this read a little slow at some moments, but because the main part of this book is so fascinating you’ll find yourself wanting to keep on going.Even though this book isn’t one I usually would read I must say I was pleasantly surprised by this book. It was thrilling and exciting and I loved the whole history part too. Especially since I’ve been to Prague too. As with a lot of great books that take place in cities I’ve been too, I could picture the main characters walking through the beautiful streets of Prague and it made this book even more fascinating to me.If you are looking for a dark and scary, well written thriller with twists.. ‘The Devil Aspect’ is definitely for you.

I am incredibly impressed by the content, structure, and formatting of this book. The text spans over 1500+ pages and contains a load of knowledge concerning all you ever wanted to know about maintaining or servicing a vehicle. It is a great investment for an individual studying to become a technician, an enthusiast, or just anyone who wants to learn how today's advanced internal combustion vehicle operates. I am about 1/4th of the way through and feel much more confident in regards to my knowledge of how a vehicle operates as well as the businesses that service them. I picked my copy up used for around $85.00, and I feel like this was a steal for all of the knowledge and experience contained within. A word of advice on textbooks (collegiate and technical); buy used. Do not be the one to take all of the depreciation. This book is not too old either, and all of the information within is timeless. Supposedly a new edition is coming out next year, and usually new editions are nothing new at all, but with how some vehicles have evolved since this books' publication (Tesla), I am interested to see the updates. Another aspect of this book that I really enjoy is that it is not one sided (everything is like a GM product). In addition, the author conveys a positive, warm, and educational tone that is not overbearing or arrogant (he knows that you are attempting to learn). In closing, books will only go so far in a career field like this, but I am studying to become a Lexus Certified Technician and am incredibly impressed.

I use this book as a learning tool and reference when working on my vehicles. Service manuals are pretty good as how-to guides but short on theory. Great explanations, figures, pictures, etc.

I am an experienced technician trying to keep up with new technology. This book explains things that did not exist when I went to school. Also a good review for my ASE recertification test that is coming up. This book would be excellent for the automotive student learning the basics.This book does not have the specific information you would find in a service manual for a particular car.

Very good book for students or anyone wanting to learn or review basic service and diagnostic procedures. Great book for DIY. Very good illustrations and photos.

I bought this book for a night summer class I took to learn about cars (it was required) but I am very impressed on how much information is in it. It is definitely geared towards people that plan on going into the industry since it has a lot of "how to" interface with customers but it still has plenty of information, and background, on all types of cars.It is structured so that it will describe how a system works, like the brakes, the different types of systems, how to diagnose them, and then how to fix most, if not all, of the problems that come up.

Contains all information you'll ever need for car repair, I use it to study for my Automotive Service classes at school.

This is my update to my earlier books. It is a great body of work on all automotive systems.
