About the Author

Qualified as a Diagnostic Radiographer, Alexander Peck began working with informatics as a Senior Radiographer at the North West London Hospitals NHS Trust, followed by several years as the former Information Systems Manager at the Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust. He is the director of a medical informatics consultancy firm plus organiser of the highly popular national imaging informatics education sessions for Radiographers and PACS Professionals. Alexander now concentrates on teaching and research, promoting Imaging Informatics education internationally and continues to champion a research based approach to further developing the better integration of informatics into clinical practice. He has been awarded Chartered I.T. Professional status by the British Computer Society, and is an active member of the SCoR IM+T Advisory Group.

Reston carefully remains objective and is able to describe the deep artistic insight of the contentious Maya Lin in her seemingly simple design and meticulous process involved in Hart's bronze sculptures. Despite neither artists' willingness to change their personal concept, the final compromise gives the Memorial its powerful impact upon viewers. Readers should be sure not to skip the "author reflection" at the book's end as Reston sees the name of a friend on the wall and admits to a vague feeling of guilt at not exposing himself to the same degree of risk. His emotions mirror the effect the wall exerts on many of its visitors

Maya Lin and her drive to get the Memorial built without changing her design is an interesting read on what goes on when committees meet they discuss her design and what they think needs to be changed in her design.It is a great Memorial to the Vietnam Veterans and one we visit every time we are in Washington,D.C.BiiiFlorida

I have visited this memorial in Washington DC many timesand even after all these years I am still moved by it. This book tellsthe story very well.

After losing a prized newspaper job at the Wall Street Journal due to the great downturn of ’09, Cheryl Tan took a year off to return to her native Singapore, and the comfort food of her youth. After meeting with her briefly, I am not surprised that she chose a difficult time to write a book, using her misfortune brilliantly. Reasons for her dexterity become evident once I got to know her family in “A Tiger in the Kitchen.”Although Tan, a capable, goal oriented type ‘A” seamlessly negotiated the transition to America, could she do the same in reverse? Especially when she had largely rejected cooking for family, viewing a life in the kitchen as cut off from the larger world, lacking power. And now, after sixteen years in America, Tan must finally contend with the ladies. She must earn her place in the kitchen.Slowly she learns to abandon the American obsession for precise measurements, formulas and procedures and begins to navigate complex recipes that often exist only in the sharp and exacting memory of one of her aunties. When she asks how much sugar to add or how long the duck should cook, she is often met with the words “agak, agak” loosely translated as “just enough” or “until it is done.’But over time spent with her aunties and mother, in the many hours it takes to properly prepare the cookery that fuses Malay, Indonesian and Chinese roots, Tan begins to see these women more clearly. She claims that although she has encountered tough and capable women in America, including driven CEOs and editors, nobody scared her more than these women in their Singaporan kitchens.Over the course of chopping, peeling, dicing and boiling, stories begin to unfold, as appetizing as the dishes themselves. Memories are offered up that would never have surfaced otherwise. Divorce, opium addiction, love and abandonment, the stuff that families are made of are handed to Tan as a gift for genuinely participating in the family legacy.Although I am not ordinarily fond of memoir cookery books, this one masterfully segues from kitchen to chronicle with natural cadence. I feel that I know these characters, the aunts and uncles, father and mother and grandmother on their own terms, gradually coming to understand them so well that when I actually attempted her recipe for Mandoo (a Chinese dumpling), I felt many eyes upon me, looking over my shoulder, silently letting me know that I could be quicker, the pleats in the dumplings neater, it could have used less filling to be tidy. But at the same time, I am convinced that they want me only to do my best. And somehow I really want to please them!“Tiger,” as the book is affectionately known, is both a frothy cocktail and a delicate family tale, that shifts from continent to continent, past to present and culture to culture with an intuitive grasp of the precise moment to move on. Tan’s journalism background comes to the fore with clear detailed writing to bring us to a tempting table laden with exotic treats. Unlike many family tales, it neither veers into an overly sentimental journey or a hard-nosed dissection of the shortcomings of either culture.And by the way, the Mandoo was delicious.

Tan manages to capture so many aspects of Singaporean life. The food, the rapid pace of change, the importance of family and cultural tradition, the special nature of the Chinese heritage in Singapore and much more. She writes in an engaging style, providing just the right amount of background history. It is also true that I enjoyed the book the second time thru after having lived in Singapore long enough to get a feel for the fabric of the city!

I loved Cheryl Tan's memoir about cooking and family -- and about how the two inevitably intersect. This beautifully-structured book alternates between her life in Manhattan and her family in Singapore; it's insightful and often laugh-out-loud funny (you'll never look at cinnamon rolls in quite the same way, and I also loved the moment when she had to risk e.coli to make her grandmother happy by sampling uncooked meat - nobody ever said family recipes had to be FDA-approved). The only thing that would make this book better would be an interactive edition where you could click on a dish and have it delivered to your door. Until that happy day, Tan's wonderfully evocative writing will be the next best thing.

Critical information is excluded such as good directions on setting up yeast starter. The book covers a paragraph maybe on this do or die element.No indications on how long to ferment or sit your bottles. That I find nuts. I have ot test every week to see if the product has aged enough.There is too much said on taste and not enough on crafting the products. Good recipes though.

Dr Colby has more facts at his fingers than any home brewer I know, and I really enjoy his writing. His experience is evident, and as a result his book will prove a valuable reference for the home brewer. The recipes are a good starting point when experimenting with different styles, and I know I’ll have a lot of fun brewing them.

I am about 30% into this. This is good for anyone who wants to study The Word and get their geek on. It gives a narrative of OT history, as well as pointing out the parallels with the NT. There is one thing to point out.. asides from being super big/long - as I was beginning my reading, the writer's style took me aback a little. ( The writer was a Jewish scholar who had converted to Christ ) I looked up the info about the author and discovered that this was written in the mid-1800's and he refers to KJV as his scriptural base. While I am reading, I have my NIV close in case the quoted verse is a bit too much. This is not a light read, but if you like to get your theocratic geek on and If you like history . It's a good read! ( I also have my bible atlas close ) ☺

As with all Edersheim's writings this book is excellent. It gives a good broad outline of Old Testament history. If you are looking for a resource that is well written and easy to follow, this will help.This is not a verse by verse commentary, but it does give excellent insight into the background and customs of the Old Testament times and cultures.

I actually own the entire collection from this writer. they are simply put, outstanding for use by the SERIOUS bible student or teacher. This writer was a one time Jew in Judaism and converted and he does a splendid job explaining the connection of the OT to the NT. He gets into the jewish aspects of what Christ did and how they came about from the OT. Get the entire edersheim collection, you won't regret it.

Thorough presentation of the Old Testament by Edersheim. Situations and people explained in language most can understand, although the writing/language used is understandably reflective of the 19th century. He often uses more words and phrases to say something than would be common in the 21st century. Still he obviously has studied not just the Bible but the times in which events occurred, plus other texts and authors from the time periods involved. Because he’s Jewish and converted to Christianity, he brings both perspectives to the task. I feel I’m growing in knowledge about the importance of the events in the Old Testament.

Note that size of this thing. Though it is five volumes, in the Kindle reading app, it is one VERY long document. It does NOT have page numbers, but it's length is 19702, for what that's worth. The author is very devoted to his faith, so there is a lot of language that is devotional in nature. The point is, though it renders the Bible record in something of a story format, I find so much extraneous language that it is hard to get much research value out of it.

This is a book you should have in your library. It is from a point that takes scripture seriously as a primary source of historical information.

Since there is no active table of contents provided, it is suggested that on the initial reading of the text, the reader establish a table of contents with locations in a computer spread-sheet so as to facilitate later readings of this material. Quotes from this entry include:"And so when at last we come to the close of Scripture, we see how the account of the creation and of the first calling of the children of God, which had been recorded in the book of Genesis, has found its full counterpart--its fulfillment--in the book of Revelation, which tells the glories of the second creation, and the perfecting of the Church of God.""It is scarcely possible to imagine a greater contrast than between the heathen accounts of the origin of all things and the scriptural narrative. ...Some have imagined that the six days of creation represent so many periods, rather than literal days, chiefly on the ground of the supposed high antiquity of our globe, and the various great epochs or periods, each terminating in a grand revolution, through which our earth seems to have passed, before coming to its present state, when it became a fit habitation for man. There is, however, no need to resort to any such theory.""Though it needs not such indirect confirmations to convince us of the truth of the narratives in the Bible, it is very remarkable how all historical investigations, when really completed and rightly applied, confirm the exactness of what is recorded in the Holy Scriptures. Even Josephus, the ancient Jewish historian, regards Nimrod as the father of heathenism, the characteristic of which is to find strength and happiness in sin, and not in God. Its essential principle is to reject all that is not seen, and to cling to that which is temporal.""...if the year of creation be computed at 4004 before Christ, the deluge, which happened 1656 years later, would fall in the year 2348 B.C....the Hebrew text contains the true chronology...This may suffice on a matter which has engaged only too much discussion. It is far more important to think of the kingdom of God, the history of which is given us in the Holy Scriptures; for now we are at the beginning of its real appearance.""For profanity consists in this: for the sensual gratification or amusement of the moment to give up that which is spiritual and unseen; to be careless of that which is holy, so as to snatch the present enjoyment, -- in short, practically not to deem anything holy at all, if it stands in the way of present pleasure.""And in this lies the mystery of Divine Providence, that it always worketh wonders, yet without seeming to work at all -- whence also it so often escapes the observation of men. Edersheim's work is around a century old, and his language now appears a bit dated, but this is still an outstanding book. Edersheim retells the Old Testament story in an interesting and gripping way. His focus is obviously to present the Old Testament events as precursors and types of the New Testament, and he finds numerous links and significances. But even leaving this aspect aside, he makes a compelling story of the Old Testament. Chapter lengths are appropriate to convenient reading. He adds much interesting historical and archaeological background, some of which may well have been re-evaluated by more recent finds, but which still add interest and context to the narrative. As an overview of the Old Testament this is superior to many more recent works in terms of readability, even if you don't always agree with the hidden significances that Edersheim quarries out.

I’m writing this review as I shiver just discovering that the firm I was interviewing gave me the top compensation I was asking for. Your job is to do your job, design, write, code. It’s not getting hired. Too often I saw people who are great at interviewing and job search but suck at actually doing the work. I was on the opposite side of that. I was great at doing my job [architecture] and not so good at communicating my value, I felt I needed a help of a professional but hiring a recruiter seemed too artificial. So I got this book and boy, it worthed a thousand times of its cost. I asked 20% increase to my current job, and got it without any bargains.Don’t waste your time. If you’re looking for a job you owe this book to yourself. Allow at least a week to read it. So if you are shooting out your resumes, that’s the perfect time to get the book.

Best job search and interview prep book hands down. Andy is the real deal. I took his webinars and watched his excellent YouTube videos and they go well with the book. Andy is warm and super helpful in person as well and has a passion for helping job seekers excel to close the gap in the difficult job market. Highly recommended and the book is easy to read and full of good tips. I feel like Andy is my ride along coach there at every step of the way in my journey toward the ultimate job for me.

Began the job hunting process recently after pondering a career change for some time. After more than 9-years of doing the same thing, the idea of even putting a resume together seemed daunting let alone actually interviewing. I ran across Andy's videos on YouTube and after watching a few decided this guy really knows his stuff. If you're serious about getting truly prepared in advance of interviewing this is where to go. Truly helping me prepare rather than simply winging it.

One of the Interview books on the market. Read it, learn it and use it. Also, Mr. Lacivita's YouTube videos are incredibly helpful and work with this book. It only took a brief time to read it, but the skills you learn from it will last a lifetime. Learn to tell your stories and sell yourself first and learn the company second.

You could spend $100 on this book and it would still be well worth the price, yet is it under $12! If you are looking for a job, or just want to learn how the process works - buy this book. It's well written, and full of Andy's lifetime of experience on the hiring process. You will not get a better return on your money than this. I've read this book, and anytime I hear of a friend who is looking for a job, I send them this book. In a very short time, they are hired! I don't think there can be a better endorsement than that.

Very helpful as I upgrade my position. This was incredibly helpful and not full of fluff.

Too complicated to understand for entry level eventhoug good

It had some good pointers I’ve saved to refer back to.
